Rising Stars ECR Leadership Program

The Rising Stars Early Career Researcher (ECR) Leadership Program provides advanced professional development to fast-track the careers of JCU's future research leaders. It is an elite program with a cohort of 5-10 ECRs selected biennially on a competitive basis.

The program comprises two strands:

Funding of up to $15,000 will be awarded to each successful Rising Star applicant.

Grants are intended to help fast-track recipients' prospects of becoming competitive, independent researchers by supporting recognised research outputs, including (but not limited to) publications in superior journals and/or competitive project and/or fellowship applications, including (but not limited to) Australian Research Council (ARC) or National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) programs or industry funding.

The Division of Research and Innovation may provide advanced professional development training to the cohort of Rising Stars including e.g. media training, visualising research, making a pitch or participation in advanced programs offered by third parties, e.g. LH Martin Institute, the learned academies.

Applications for 2018 close 5.00pm on Friday 1 June. All proposals should be completed on the application form and emailed, with a brief academic CV, to Bradley.Smith@jcu.edu.au.

Applications will be assessed by a multidisciplinary panel appointed by the Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor. Recommendations made by the panel will be reviewed and, if successful, approved by the Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor.

Applications must meet the following Selection Criteria:

  1. Successful track record - evidence of performance relevant to opportunity
  2. Prospects of the proposed project and professional development to contribute to the applicant becoming a competitive, independent researcher
  3. Evidence of the applicant's leadership potential, and
  4. Alignment to the JCU Strategic Intent.

For the purposes of this program, an Early Career Researcher (ECR) is defined as a member of the JCU academic staff who has been appointed at Lecturer B or above, and who holds a doctorate awarded within the last eight years.

The policy intent of the program is to develop the research leadership capabilities of JCU's profile academic staff. Research-only post-doctoral fellows are not eligible to apply unless they have received an offer of a Lecturer B or above position to commence in the following year or it can otherwise be demonstrated that the University has, or will, make a medium to long-term commitment to the applicant. In those circumstances the applicant will need to make the case that their circumstances are consistent with the policy intent.

JCU acknowledges different research career pathways and will consider variances to this definition, where, for example, family responsibilities have reduced the opportunity to undertake research for some period(s) after graduation. In such circumstances, it is the responsibility of the applicant to  make the case for variance.

Project funding of up to $15,000 may be used for a range of activities, such as research projects (including travel) and/or advanced coaching for fellowship and grant applications. It is expected that Colleges will provide basic facilities.

Project funding may not be used to provide a postgraduate stipend or to supplement the applicant’s salary.

Successful applicants will be advised in June 2018 and it is expected that the grant will be fully expended by 31 December 2018. There may be some flexibility to hold funding over to 2019 for, e.g. travel to present at an International Conference however it is expected that funding will be fully used over the 6 months to the end of the year.

A final report on the outcomes of the project must be submitted to the JCU Research Office upon completion. The Research Office will provide a pro-forma report form for this purpose.

It is anticipated that College Deans or relevant line managers will also expect timely progress reports of successful applicants as part of the applicant's PMP process.

Final reports will be referred to the Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor for review.
