One resident’s view of life at University Hall...
"In my 4 ½ years at University Hall I have been provided with many opportunities to succeed on both an academic level and on a social level, with the many college functions that are organised to promote college spirit. The Fisher Shield is a great way for students to support their college in the sporting arena, and we won the shield 3 out of the 4 years I was able to participate! Living at University Hall has allowed me to grow up independently but not alone, as there are many people who are willing to help. I have made lifelong friends at University Hall and will never forget the good times that were had."
University Hall was the first residence to be established at the University and is at present the largest of the student residences with 291 rooms. University Hall offers single full-board rooms to a wide diversity of students from different social, economic, regional and national backgrounds.
This Hall is centrally located on the main campus and is set in magnificent, well-established grounds. The main four-storey A & B Wings house 225 residents, with general amenities in the undercroft. The Townhouses accommodate on average 8 residents per floor sharing lounge, dining, kitchen, bathroom and laundry facilities.
Each study-bedroom is furnished with:
Curtains are not provided (in most rooms) but curtain rods are available. If you wish to curtain your room, the window size is 2.43 m by 1.22 m (8 feet high by 4 feet wide). A kitchenette with sink, microwave and kettle/hot water urn is conveniently located on each floor, and you may supply your own small refrigerator in your room (charges apply).
In the undercrofts of A Wing we have a Junior Common Room, TV Room, Computer Lab, Gymnasium, Laundry and the Duty RA Room. Located under B Wing we have another Laundry, a Communal Kitchen, Theatre and the Senior Common Room which offers a members only bar, television and pool table. A volleyball court is available to all residents and is often used throughout the year especially when the inter-college sports competition is in full swing. A piano is located in the dining hall.
The fully air-conditioned Facilities Building with its huge windows overlooking the grounds and barbecue area, contains the dining hall, kitchen, office and conference rooms. This building is one of the finest on campus, with the upstairs Conference Rooms surrounded by wide verandahs to take advantage of the tropical climate.
Residential support is provided by our Senior Residential Assistant and a group of 14 Residential Assistants (RAs). In addition, our office is open between 8:45am and 4:45pm, Monday to Friday, to help with administrative matters and our Hall is serviced by the JCU Halls of Residence catering and housekeeping teams. Together, we aim to provide you with a safe, supportive and pleasant place in which to live and learn.
