Grounds and Maintenance

JCU’s Estate Office are the professionals, administrators and technical staff responsible for the physical infrastructure (buildings, campus and grounds) and the provision of campus services to James Cook University.

Grounds

Our tropical gardens are an asset to the Halls and residents are welcome to use them for quiet study or recreation. We are fortunate to have such beautiful surroundings for everyone to enjoy. Please help keep the grounds looking good by removing rubbish and not dropping – or allowing your visitors to drop – cigarette butts or other litter in the grounds or gardens.

The acoustics in our gardens are such that noise carries easily upstairs into rooms flanking the gardens. Please use this area with consideration for other residents, and remember that the gardens are not suitable for ball games.

Maintenance

Any faults should be reported through the JCU Halls Portal or to your Hall Office or RA. Minor repairs or maintenance, which may include replacing light bulbs, repairing fans, cupboards etc. will be attended to as soon as possible.

For emergency repairs during business hours contact your Hall Office, and after hours contact the Residential Assistant on Duty.

Any access to student rooms will be conducted in a professional manner and notice will be given where possible. However, when you tell us that maintenance or repairs are required, the maintenance person or appropriate trades person may enter your room without further notice; lodging a maintenance request implies consent to this.

All JCU Maintenance staff and trades persons are required to sign-in with Halls administration and wear identifying names or tags on their uniform. Residents are encouraged to report any unexpected/unknown visitor or trades persons to their Hall Office or Duty RA.
