Mixed active content blocked in Firefox and Chrome

LTSE Learning Design Blended Learning LearnJCU Mixed active content blocked in Firefox and Chrome

Overview of the issue

Most web browsers, including Firefox and Chrome, are regularly updated to new versions and often included changed security settings. When a publisher does not provide content securely, the default browser security settings can prevent some content external to JCU being displayed correctly within LearnJCU. This is called 'mixed active content' blocking and can result in a blank page being displayed in LearnJCU instead of the reading.

A temporary way to display blocked content is to open the link in a new browser tab or window. However, the following workarounds are recommended when you need to view multiple items that may contain mixed content.

Suggested workarounds

Viewing Digital Library content

Chrome (Updated 20-07-2017)

1. Locate the shield icon on the right hand side of the address bar and click it.

2. Click the Load unsafe scripts button then click OK.

Your reading should now load.

Firefox (Updated 20-07-2017)

1. Locate the lock icon on the left hand side of the address bar and click it.

2. Click the arrow to the right of the 'Firefox has blocked parts of this page' message  pulldown and select Disable protection for now button.

Your reading should now load.

Publishing Digital Library content

Staff using Firefox and Chrome may notice that clicking the ‘Enter the Digital Library’ link produces a blank screen. The solution is to right-click on the link and choose ‘Open Link in New Tab’. The Digital Library will then display normally in the new tab.
