What is Padlet?

Padlet is an online bulletin board tool that you and your students can use to post text and other content types, such as images, audio and video.

With Padlet, you can create an online learning activity that is engaging and collaborative, and students can post their ideas asynchronously or synchronously. Padlet is available within LearnJCU and is supported by The Learning Environments Team.

Layouts for Padlets

There are many types of layouts to choose from:

  • Wall - posts in brick-like format
  • Stream - posts one after another (create date ascending or descending)
  • Grid - posts in rows
  • Shelf - posts in columns
  • Map - posts pinned to map
  • Canvas - most flexible, posts can be dropped anywhere
  • Timeline - posts pinned to horizontal line

Online activities and applications

Comments can be turned on or off providing ways to share Learner-Learner, Learner-Teacher, or Learner-Content interactions. Imagine the possibilities, here are just a few ideas:

Accessing the Padlet tool

You can access Padlet from the Content Market in your LearnJCU Subject.

  1. Go to subject site
  2. In left-menu ('Details & Actions'), click on View subject & institution tools
  3. In side panel, click on bottom link Browse all subject tools
  4. Look for tile, My Padlet
  5. First time, click on your JCU Microsoft single sign on (this will establish a Padlet account)
  6. A new window will open with you signed into the Padlet Dashboard.

Creating a Padlet

  1. From the Dashboard, click on the Make a Padlet button.
  2. On the next screen, choose a layout for your Padlet. To start off with, select Wall (there are other formats you can choose from to suit your specific needs).
  3. You will see a Modify pane.  Choose a name and description for your Padlet.
  4. Scroll down the Modify pane to find the Posting and Content Filtering settings.
  5. There are four settings that you should look at:
    1. Comments – if you want your students to be able to add comments under others’ posts, turn Comments on.
    2. Reactions – if you want your students to be able to like posts or vote for or rate others’ posts turn these items on.
    3. Require Approval – if you want to check posts before they are made public, turn on.
    4. Filter Profanity – it’s probably a good idea to turn this on.
  6. Once you have made your setting changes, click the Next button.
  7. Click the START POSTING button.  We recommend that you make a first post with instructions about what you want your students to do in the Padlet.

Posting to a Padlet

  1. Click on the round PLUS icon at bottom-right of the Padlet.
  2. In the blank post that appears, add a title and text and other content types as shown below.
  3. See below for a completed post. Note. In this Padlet, others can like and add comments to posts.

Inserting (sharing) a Padlet into LearnJCU

Each Padlet has its own unique web address (URL). You can make this Padlet link available to students so they can post to it. There are three ways to share a Padlet to your subject site.

The simplest way is to share the Padlet via a 'Link Item':

  1. In the top-right of the Padlet, click on Share .
  2. Click Copy link to clipboard 
  3. Go back to subject site and create Link item
  4. Copy Padlet link into URL field.
