Copyright Officer for the University and Designated Representative for "Take Down" Notifications

The University Copyright Officer provides advice and assistance to members of the JCU Community in meeting their legal obligations in regards to copyright and is the Designated Representative to receive notifications or other forms of notice from third parties in relation to content transmitted, cached, hosted or referred to on the University's systems in relation to copyright.

The Copyright Officer oversees or is the first point of contact for:

  • Assisting staff and students to understand their obligations under the Copyright Act, including:
    • Maintaining FAQs, Guides and other educational resources about copyright obligations.
    • Providing advice to staff and students on copyright obligations through the copyright@jcu.edu.au email address and Copyright Contact Form.
  • Administration of licence requirements and liaison with AVCC, CAL, Screenrights, Music Agencies, and the JCU University community with regard to:
    • Print and graphic copying and communication
    • Audio-visual copying and communication
    • Music copying and communication
  • Receiving notifications or other forms of notice from third parties in relation to content transmitted, cached, hosted or referred to on the University's systems in relation to copyright, which entails
    • Managing external notifications of alleged copyright infringements in a timely and confidential manner.
    • Referring material that may require takedown actions to the appropriate department heads or the JCU legal department.
  • Claims to Copyright Agency Limited - royalties made available to JCU schools/units/centres
  • Quarterly payments made to CAL and Screenrights for use of licences based on $ per "equivalent full-time student unit" (EFTSU)
  • Co-ordination of surveys undertaken every 5/6 years by ACNielsen on behalf of CAL and Screenrights
  • Participation in the national University Copyright Network
