VPN for Mobiles

The following instructions will guide you through the steps to configure your Apple iPhone, iPad or Google Android device to connect to the JCU VPN service.

Apple iOS

Start by turning on your device (if it’s not already on). You’ll be presented with the Home screen, if you need to return to this screen at any time press the Home Button (big black button at the bottom).

Make sure you are connected to Wireless or 3G before you start

  1. Tap the Settings icon

  2. Select General

  3. Tap VPN

  4. Select the Add VPN Configuration… option

  5. Choose IPSec as your connection type and enter the following information:

  • Description: JCU

  • Server: tvl-portal.jcu.edu.au

  • Account: Enter your full JCU email address

  • Password: Enter your normal JCU password

  • Use Certification: OFF

  • Group Name: eduroam

  • Secret: walkabout

  • Leave Proxy set to OFF

  • Then tap Save

  1. Now, toggle the VPN connection to ON and the JCU VPN service will connect.

  2. To disconnect from the JCU VPN service, toggle the VPN connection to OFF.

Google Android

Start by turning on your device (if it’s not already on) and make sure you are connected to Wireless or 3G before you start.

  1. Navigate to the application drawer then select the Settings icon

  2. Tap More… and choose VPN from the available list

  3. Tap the + icon to create a new VPN profile and enter the following information:

  • Name: JCU

  • Type: IPSec Xauth PSK

  • Server: tvl-portal.jcu.edu.au

  • IPSec Identifier: eduroam

  • IPSec preshared key: walkabout

  • Then tap Save

  1. Now select the JCU profile you’ve just created from the available list and you’ll be prompted for:

  • Username: Enter your full JCU email address

  • Password: Enter your normal JCU password

  • Tick the Save account information check box

  • Then tap Connect

  1. The JCU VPN service will now be connected.

  2. To disconnect from the JCU VPN service, select the JCU profile and tap on the Disconnect button.
