The JCU Library holds a number of genealogical handbooks, among other general resources. To look for resources on the library’s catalogue, go to the ‘Browse Search’ page and place the word “Genealogy” in the ‘Subject Heading’ search box. You will get different results from using different combinations, for example:
Genealogy -- Handbooks
Australia -- Genealogy
England -- Genealogy
You will find most genealogical handbooks and guides are located in the 929.1 and 929.3 areas in a library using the Dewey Decimal System (which is used by the JCU Library and most public libraries in Australia). For example:
Kyle, N. (1988). We should’ve listened to Grandma: tracing women ancestors. Sydney. Allen & Unwin. 929.10994 KYL (a second copy is in the reference collection in Townsville).
Vine Hall, N.J. (1994). Tracing your family history in Australia: a guide to sources. (2nd ed.). Albert Park: Scriptorium Family History Centre. R929.394 VIN 1994
If you have found one book that is exactly what you are after, you can use the call number or subject headings for that book to find others like it.
While most of our genealogical handbooks are in the Reference Collection, and cannot be borrowed out, you will find some books available for loan – and you can always try looking in the same areas in a public library.
