Student in hospital following fall

A 20-year-old international student is in hospital following a fall from a balcony early on Saturday morning (Nov 4).

Nov 4, 2013: - A 20-year-old international student at James Cook University in Townsville is in hospital following a fall from a balcony early on Saturday morning.

A resident of one of the residential colleges at the university – University Hall – the young woman is believed to have fallen about six metres from the balcony of one of the rooms.

The accident happened about 12.30 am on Saturday.

The manager of JCU’s Halls of Residence Gail Harrower said that the young woman had suffered a broken wrist, a possible another fracture and cuts and abrasions.

“We are very hopeful that she will make a full recovery,” Ms Harrower said.

“She has been very lucky and her fellow students from Uni Halls are to be commended for their swift action in looking after her and summoning help.”

It is understood there were no witnesses to the incident and police have investigated.

The University’s work health and safety unit will also be investigating the incident.
