Academic Performance Information

To achieve satisfactory academic performance as a student, you must:

  • Pass all core subjects; and
  • Maintain a course Grade Point Average (GPA) of 4.00 or above; and
  • Pass more than 50% of completed credit points.

Academic Performance Notice

If you do not achieve satisfactory academic performance, your academic status will change, and the University will send you an Academic Performance Notice.

The Academic Performance Notice will:

  • Advise of your current academic status.
  • Advise conditions, if relevant, placed on your study/ enrolment which you must meet in the following or future teaching periods in order to continue in the course;
  • Provide details on the next stages of the progression process if you continue to fail to achieve satisfactory academic performance;
  • Provide web links to the University’s support services, including academic and learning resources;
  • Provide information on the formal Review and Appeal process, and other options.

This is assigned to students who have achieved or are achieving a satisfactory level of performance.

You will only receive an Academic Performance Notice for this status if your previous status was not Satisfactory (Academic Caution or Conditional). This means you have now passed all previous conditions placed on your study/enrolment, have passed core subject fails and improved your GPA above 4.00.

If you receive notification of an Academic Caution status, this indicates that you may require some support to help you succeed in your studies.  You may have failed the first attempt of a core subject or have a low GPA.

It is important that you achieve satisfactory academic performance in future teaching periods (this means passing all of the subjects that you are enrolled in).

If your academic performance does not improve, you may be placed at an academic status of Conditional or Excluded so it is important to take advantage of the help and assistance on offer.

If you receive notification of a Conditional status, this indicates that you failed subject/s and have not maintained satisfactory academic performance.  You may require some support to help you succeed in your studies.

Conditions have also been placed on your study/enrolment which may include one or more of the below conditions:

  • You must pass next attempt of specified subjects or you will be excluded from your course, refer to your Academic Performance Notice for specific subjects; and/or
  • You must pass greater than 50% of completed credit points studied in each enrolled teaching period or trimester to improve your course GPA sufficiently to avoid course exclusion; and/or
  • You must comply with the intervention strategy as advised by your College; and/or.
  • You must comply with an intervention plan as supplied by the Academic Administration and Enrolment Team; and/or
  • You must pass first attempt of all future year levels listed in List 3 or you will be excluded from your course, and/or

All conditions will remain current until they are met.

You must pass the specific conditions outlined in your Academic Performance Notice in the next, or future enrolled teaching periods.

If your academic performance does not improve, or you fail to meet your Conditions, you will be placed at an Academic Status of Excluded so it is important to take advantage of the help and assistance on offer.

If you receive notification of an Excluded status, this means that you are not permitted to continue in your course, or transfer to a course with the same inherent requirements. You may have not passed the conditions prevoiusly placed on your study/enrolment or have a low GPA. You will be withdrawn from your current subjects and course.

The exclusion does not prevent you from studying in another discipline at James Cook University.  Your academic record will be considered in the assessment process if you apply to transfer course.
