Policy and Procedures

1. Professores Emeriti Advisory Committee

The Professores Emeriti Advisory Committee shall be appointed by the Vice-Chancellor and the membership of which shall be:

Chair - Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor.

Ex Officio – Chairperson of the Academic Board.

Other - Two Professors of the University appointed by the Vice-Chancellor.

Secretary - The University Secretary shall be Secretary to the Advisory Committee.

2. Retirement

Council will consider the granting of the title of Professor Emeritus to a Professor of the University:

a. If, on retirement, the Professor meets the following criteria:

  • has occupied a Chair in the University or a position with the rank and title of Professor, for a minimum period of ten years;

  • has, during that period, given distinguished academic service significantly above and beyond the level of service normally expected of a Professor to the scholarly community and/or to the University community; and

b. If that Professor is subsequently recommended for the granting of such title by the Vice-Chancellor, after the latter has received the advice of the Professores Emeriti Advisory Committee.

3. Resignation

Council will consider the granting of the title of Professor Emeritus to a Professor of the University:

a. If, on resignation, a Professor meets the criteria stated in 2a above; and

b. If that Professor is subsequently recommended for the granting of the title of Professor Emeritus by the Vice-Chancellor, after the latter has received the advice of the Professores Emeritus Advisory Committee, on the grounds that the granting of such title to such person would not be inappropriate having regard to that person's likely future career.

4. Special Circumstances

Irrespective of 2 and 3 above, Council will consider the granting of the title of Professor Emeritus to any former Professor of the University in circumstances which it deems to be special.

5. Procedures

Retiring or resigning Professors who meet the criterion in 2a above, or where special circumstances have been identified, and who are nominated by two senior colleagues of the University, will be considered by the Professores Emeriti Advisory Committee for the granting of the title of Professor Emeritus.

6. Withdrawal of Grant of Title of Professor Emeritus

Council may, at any time and without giving any reason, withdraw its previously given grant of the title of Professor Emeritus to any person.
