To ensure the identification and subsequent review for suitability for continued offering of subjects with low enrolments. This process aims to support academic quality, financial viability and appropriate resource utilisation in the context of regional need.
This policy applies to all undergraduate subjects and postgraduate coursework subjects with enrolment numbers less than that stated in section 2 of this policy.
1. Relevant Deputy Vice Chancellors are required to annually review enrolment numbers in all undergraduate and postgraduate coursework subjects.
2. Relevant Deputy Vice-Chancellors are required to report to Education Committee on ongoing undergraduate and postgraduate coursework subjects with enrolments less than:
1st Year Subjects
2nd Year Subjects
Other coursework subjects
(Excluding Honours subjects)
3. For subjects with low enrolment as defined by section 2, the relevant Deputy Vice-Chancellor must either:
3.1. Disestablish the subject by the approved process, or
3.2. If the subject is deemed to have substantive regional significance or strategic importance
3.2.1. Continue to offer the subject, and
3.2.2. Consider mechanisms to achieve minimum enrolment numbers as outlined in section two, for example rotation of subjects on a two-year basis, change to block mode or other suitable mechanism, and
3.2.3. Provide an analysis of the impact of low enrolment numbers on academic productivity and workload, and
3.2.4. Provide a brief explanation for subject retention, and
3.2.5. Report to Education Committee at the last committee meeting each year using the approved template.
