Intent

To acknowledge and promote student academic excellence, James Cook University will present awards to eligible students.

Scope

All James Cook University students who are eligible to receive an award of recognition and to staff involved in the award process

Definitions

GPA: Grade Point Average.

Embedded honours: an honours program which is undertaken as part of the undergraduate Bachelors award (as opposed to a graduate honours program which is undertaken subsequent to graduation with an undergraduate Bachelors award).

Key Objectives

1. To acknowledge and promote student academic excellence,

2. To give students recognition that feeds into their curriculum vitae and future careers, and

3. To make students visible to the academic community thereby upgrading standards of excellence and achievement.

Policy

1. Awards of Recognition

To acknowledge and promote student academic excellence, each year the University shall present the following awards of recognition:

For outstanding academic achievement in both coursework studies and research undertaken at undergraduate level

Academic Medal (Masters Coursework)

For outstanding academic achievement in coursework studies at a Masters level.

Academic Medal (Bachelor Honours)

Divisions

For excellent academic achievement in both coursework studies and research undertaken at undergraduate level

Academic Medal

(Bachelor Coursework)

Divisions

For excellent academic achievement in coursework studies undertaken at undergraduate level

Letters of Commendation

Divisions

For students who have achieved a minimum GPA of 6 calculated over all subjects undertaken during the previous calendar year, and having completed at least 12 credit points of study during that calendar year

Medal for Excellence for a Doctoral Research Thesis

Research Education Sub-Committee

For a candidate whose research doctoral thesis was judged to be passed ‘cum laude’

Medal for Excellence for a Research Masters Thesis

Research Education Sub-

For a research masters candidate whose thesis was judged to be passed ‘cum laude’

Dean’s Award for Research Higher Degree Excellence

Graduate Research School

For demonstrated excellence in a research higher degree where the candidate has been commended by their independent examiners for substantial contribution to their field of research.

2. Criteria for Eligibility for Awards of Recognition

The criteria for eligibility of students to be considered for an award of recognition are specified in the Award for Academic Excellence Procedure.

3. Identification of Recipients of the Awards of Recognition

The identification of recipients of awards of recognition will be conducted in accordance with the Award for Academic Excellence Procedure.

4. Number of University Medals to be Awarded

It is intended that not more than 10% of students graduating with first class honours will be awarded a University Medal each year. The eligibility criteria will be reviewed annually, with particular consideration given to the percentage of students graduating with first class honours in the preceding year who were awarded a University medal.
