Adjunct Appointments Procedure

Intent

Adjunct appointments provide a mechanism for recognising in a formal way suitably qualified and experienced individuals who have a close association with, and make a significant contribution to, the academic activities of the University in a largely honorary capacity on an ongoing basis. This includes recent JCU research higher degree graduates who need access to JCU resources to publish their research.

Scope

This Procedure applies to all Adjunct appointees including Professional/Clinical, Academic and Research Fellows.

Procedure

1.  Proposals, Nominations and Approval of Adjunct Appointments

Proposals for appointments are to be made on the Adjunct Appointment Form through the College Dean/Director to the appropriate Deputy Vice Chancellor. A recent curriculum vitae of each nominee is to be attached.

Nominations will be considered by either the Deputy Vice Chancellor or through a relevant Divisional Adjunct Appointment Committee which, in the case of each Division could be constituted as follows:

  • Deputy Vice Chancellor (Chair);
  • College/Directorate/Centre/Institute Dean/Director
  • Director, Academic Quality and Strategy
  • Director, Research Development

During deliberations the DVC or Committee may elect to seek further advice (i.e. from external assessors), to endorse an appointment and determine the level of appointment.

Appointments must refer to the Position Classification Standards contained in this Procedure (clause 5) to assist in the deliberations.

If there is a Divisional Committee, the Deputy Vice Chancellor will assess the Committee’s recommendations and approve as per the Human Resources Delegation Register.

Once approved, an appointment letter will be sent to the Adjunct Appointee and on acceptance the appointment details will be recorded in the HR System.

2. Period of Appointment

Appointments will be normally be made for periods of up to three (3) years and may be renewed. When the Adjunct appointee is expected to contribute to the education of research higher degree students as a principal advisor, the appointment may be up to five years to span the expected duration of candidature.

Appointments will automatically lapse at the end of the appointment term or if the Adjunct is otherwise engaged by the University in a remunerated capacity (such as, as a consultant or employee).

3. Re-appointment

Subsequent re-appointments may be approved by the Deputy Vice Chancellor as per the Human Resources Delegations Policy, on the recommendation of the College Dean; Director or equivalent. In determining whether an Adjunct should be re-appointed, consideration will be given to whether the Adjunct has significantly contributed to University during his/her earlier appointment.

Once approved, an appointment letter will be sent to the Adjunct Appointee and on acceptance the appointment details will be recorded in the HR System.

4. Termination of Appointment

Adjunct appointments may be terminated in writing by the appropriate Deputy Vice Chancellor as per the Human Resources Delegations Register, in his/her absolute discretion.

Adjunct appointments may also be terminated in writing by the appropriate Deputy Vice Chancellor for breaches of applicable JCU Policies, including but not limited to the Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research (https://www.jcu.edu.au/policy/research-management/code-for-the-responsible-conduct-of-research) and the University’s Code of Conduct (https://www.jcu.edu.au/policy/corporate-governance/code-of-conduct).

5. Position Classification Standards

CLASSIFICATION OF PROFESSIONAL/CLINICAL APPOINTMENTS

Level

Skills Base

Adjunct Lecturer - Level B

Possesses basic qualification in a relevant discipline and/or appropriate experience recognised by the Division

Be registered with the relevant State/Territory or National Registration body as appropriate

Contributes to the development of their profession through clinical research and/or teaching and/or professional advocacy

Adjunct Senior Lecturer - Level C

5 years of distinguished clinical service

Significant contribution to their profession through clinical research and/or teaching and or professional advocacy

Fellowship or equivalent professional qualification in a relevant clinical discipline

Adjunct Associate Professor - Level D

8 years of distinguished clinical service and/or a senior position within a health care system

Outstanding contribution to their profession through research and/or teaching and/or professional advocacy

A national profile within their profession

Adjunct Professor - Level E

National leadership within their profession

Holds a senior influential position within a health care system at a State/Territory or National level

CLASSIFICATION OF ACADEMIC APPOINTMENTS

Adjunct Lecturer - Level B

A "Level B" academic shall have qualifications and/or experience recognised by the institution as appropriate for the relevant discipline area. In many cases a position at this level will require a doctoral or masters qualification or equivalent accreditation and standing. In determining experience relative to qualifications, regard is given to teaching experience, experience in research, experience outside tertiary education, creative achievement, professional contributions and / or to technical achievement.

Adjunct Senior Lecturer - Level C

A "Level C" academic will normally have advance qualifications and / or recognised significant experience in the relevant discipline area. A position at this level will normally require a doctoral qualification or equivalent accreditation and standing. In determining experience relative to qualifications, regard shall be given to teaching experience, experience in research, experience outside tertiary education, creative achievement, professional contributions and / or to technical achievement. In addition a position at this level will normally require a record of demonstrable scholarly and professional achievement in the relevant discipline area.

Adjunct Associate Professor - Level D

A "Level D" academic will normally have the same skill base as a "Level C" academic. In addition there is a requirement for academic excellence which may be evidenced by an outstanding contribution to teaching and / or the profession.

Adjunct Professor - Level E

A "Level E" academic shall have the same skill base as a "Level D" academic but will be recognised as a leading authority in the relevant discipline area.

CLASSIFICATION OF RESEARCH FELLOW APPOINTMENTS

Adjunct Research Fellow – Level B

A Senior Research Fellow must have a doctoral degree and the equivalent of three years’ postdoctoral experience with evidence of significant postdoctoral research outputs.

Adjunct Senior Research Fellow – Level C

A Principal Research Fellow must have at least 5 years postdoctoral experience and a national profile in the relevant research field.

Adjunct Principal Research Fellow – Level D

The Senior Principal Research Fellow must have at least 8 years of postdoctoral research with a requirement for academic results and a profile of international excellence in the relevant research field recognised by peers.

Adjunct Professorial Research Fellow – Level E

A Professorial Fellow must have a position of international leadership in his or her field of expertise and a distinguished record of research and scholarly contributions as evaluated by peers.
