The Deans’ Scholarships are offered to high achieving students and provides financial support for the length of their degree, allowing students to fully commit to their studies without having to worry about financial support.
The value of the scholarship shall be $10,000 per year, for the minimum number of years required for the recipient to complete their degree.
One new scholarship shall be awarded per College each year.
This bursary is subject to the provisions of James Cook University’s Coursework Scholarships, Bursaries and Grants Policy.

Am I eligible?

If all the below statements describe you and your current situation, you can apply for this scholarship.

  • I am an Australian citizen.
  • I am or will be enrolled full-time (minimum 12 credit points per teaching period) at the Cairns or Townsville campus
  • I am or will be admitted to an undergraduate course offered by one of the following Colleges:
    • Marine & Environmental Sciences
    • Science, Technology & Engineering
    • Business, Law & Governance
    • Arts, Society & Education
  • I completed Year 12 in the year prior to commencing study at JCU
  • I have obtained a Queensland Overall Position (OP) score of 1, or the equivalent from another Australian State.

What would I receive?

If you are a successful applicant of this scholarship you will receive $10,000 per year in two equal instalments, for the minimum number of years required to complete the degree for which you are awarded the scholarship (as specified in the Course Handbook).

Mid year entry recipients will receive an initial instalment of $10,000, to cover their first two study periods. Ongoing payments will then continue in two equal instalments after census dates.

How do I apply?

Prior to completing an application, you should carefully read the Scholarship Rules below.
Applicants wanting to apply for this scholarship must attach the following documents:

  • a copy of their birth certificate, passport or Australian citizenship certificate
  • a copy of their Queensland Tertiary Entrance Statement showing Overall Position (OP) score, or its equivalent from other Australian States
  • no more than three written references attesting to the applicant’s character and/or suitability to receive the scholarship
  • their curriculum vitae
  • evidence of school, community or other achievements
  • evidence of current financial circumstances
  • any other supporting documentation that would assist the Selection Committee in developing an opinion as to the merit of the application.

When applying for a scholarship it is very important that you ensure that you include all relevant documents (including a completed application form) and that your application is submitted before the closing date. If an application is incomplete, it will not be considered.

Introduction

The Deans’ Scholarships are offered to high achieving students and provides financial support for the length of their degree, allowing students to fully commit to their studies without having to worry about financial support.

Nature of the Scholarship

The value of the scholarship shall be $10,000 per year, for the minimum number of years required for the recipient to complete the degree for which they are awarded the scholarship, as specified in the Course Handbook; or such amount as the Selection Committee determine from time to time.
One new scholarship shall be awarded per College each year.

Eligibility Criteria

The Deans’ Scholarships shall be open to competition among applicants who:

* are Australian citizens
* are enrolled full-time (minimum 12 credit points per teaching period) at the Cairns or Townsville campus
* are admitted to an undergraduate course offered by one of the following Colleges:
› Marine & Environmental Sciences
› Science, Technology & Engineering
› Business, Law & Governance
› Arts, Society & Education
* have completed Year 12 in the year prior to commencing study
* have obtained a Queensland Overall Position (OP) score  of 1, or its equivalent from other Australian States.

Selection Criteria

The Selection Criteria are:
* the motivation of the applicant to succeed in their chosen field
* communication skills
* demonstrated leadership
* school or community organisation involvement and/or care shown about events in the community, country and the world
* other achievements (e.g. sports, music, debating)
* financial circumstances
* the character of the candidate for the award
* any other criteria that the Selection Committee deems appropriate.

Application Procedures

Applications must be submitted on the official application form no later than 31 January of the year in which the scholarship is to be awarded.

Applicants must submit with the official form, where appropriate:
* a copy of their birth certificate, passport or Australian citizenship certificate
* a copy of their Queensland Tertiary Entrance Statement showing Overall Position (OP) score, or its equivalent from other Australian States
* no more than three written references attesting to the applicant’s character and/or suitability to receive the scholarship
* their curriculum vitae
* evidence of school, community or other achievements
* evidence of current financial circumstances
* any other supporting documentation that would assist the Selection Committee in developing an opinion as to the merit of the application.

* Applications submitted without the relevant documentation will not be considered.

The applicant authorises the Selection Committee to make such enquiries as to the applicant’s character and suitability to receive the scholarship, which includes authorisation for the Selection Committee to examine the applicant’s academic record, and seek opinions from relevant members of the academic staff of this University or any other academic institution.

Applicants who are unsuccessful in their bid for a Deans Scholarship will automatically be considered for a Deans Bursary.

Selection Process

The award of the scholarship shall be made in the absolute discretion of the Selection Committee, which shall comprise:
* Deputy Vice Chancellor, Tropical Environments & Societies, or nominee (Chair)
* College Dean, Marine & Environmental Sciences, or nominee
* College Dean, Science, Technology & Engineering, or nominee
* College Dean, Business, Law & Governance, or nominee
* College Dean, Arts, Society & Education, or nominee.

Three members shall form a quorum and must include the Dean of the relevant College (or nominee).

The Selection Committee reserves the right not to award a Scholarship in any year if, in the opinion of the Selection Committee, there is no applicant of sufficient merit to warrant an award.

Applicants are required to undertake an interview as part of their application.

The Selection Committee will determine all matters relating to the selection of the scholarship recipient.

An applicant may not be awarded both a Deans Scholarship and a Deans Bursary.

Payment

Monies payable to the recipient shall be paid in two equal instalments after the census date of Study Period 1 and Study Period 2.

Mid year entry recipients will receive an initial instalment of $10,000, to cover their first two study periods. Ongoing payments will then continue in two equal instalments after census dates.

Conditions of the Scholarship

The recipient must maintain a GPA of 6.0 or above in each Teaching Period of the Scholarship. Where the recipient fails to meet this requirement the scholarship shall be terminated.

If the recipient defers their study, the recipient will no longer be eligible for the scholarship. Where a scholarship is terminated pursuant to the provisions of this clause it may be awarded to another suitable applicant.

If the recipient suspends their study (with our without approval), the scholarship shall be terminated.

If the recipient transfers to another course of study, continuation of the scholarship, including tenure, will be subject to the approval of the Selection Committee.

If the recipient fails to comply with any of the conditions of this scholarship, the Chair of the Selection Committee may suspend or terminate the scholarship, or take such action as it deems necessary to enforce compliance with the condition by the recipient.

A student may lodge a request for review of decision in accordance with the provisions of the Student Complaints Policy and Procedures.

The requirements of the Scholarship shall not make the awarding of the Scholarship conditional upon the recipient providing unremunerated services or products to the donor.

Administration of the Scholarship

The Scholarship shall be owned by the Division of Tropical Environments and Societies.

The scholarship shall be administered by the Scholarships Office, on behalf of the Selection Committee.

The funds of the scholarship shall be held in an account in the name of the University and shall be administered by the officer of the University charged with administering the scholarship.

Where there is a fund maintaining the award, the annual value of the award shall be approximately equal to the annual income from the fund.

Income from a fund not expended on the award which it maintains, shall be added to and become part of the fund.

Where an award provides some benefit to the recipient from a body external to the University, or an obligation upon a body external to the University, the University, its servants and agents, shall not be liable for that benefit or obligation.

Definitions

Definition of terms is as per the Glossary of Terms for Policies in the Student and Teaching and Course Management, with the following additions:
“academic institution” includes University, Technical and Further Education College, private education provider, secondary school and any other institution that undertakes teaching or research
“award” means the scholarship, bursary or grant
