ITNewcom Foundation University Scholarship

The ITNewcom Foundation's vision is to give Indigenous Australians the opportunity to continue the education journey through university and to see more and more Indigenous Australians joining the ranks of the professions.

This scholarship is subject to the provisions of James Cook University’s Coursework Scholarships, Bursaries and Grants Policy.

Am I eligible?

If all the below statements describe you and your current situation, you can apply for this scholarship:

  • I am an Australian citizen who Identifies as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander; and
  • I am enrolled full time in my 1st or 2nd year; and
  • I am enrolled in an undergraduate Engineering or IT Course within the Division of Tropical Environments & Societies. (Diploma of Higher Education not eligible)

What would I receive?

If you are a successful applicant of this scholarship you will receive $5,000 paid in two instalments after Census date of Study Period 2 then Study Period 1 of the following year that the scholarship is awarded.

How do I apply?

Applications must be submitted on the official online application no later than the date set by the Selection Committee for the year in which the award is to be made.

Applicants must answer all questions on the online application and upload the following documents:

  • A signed Statutory Declaration confirming you are of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent; and
  • a written statement as part of the online application answering all questions; and
  • a copy of your Centrelink ABSTUDY statement (if applicable); and
  • a copy of your Academic record or school report; and
  • no more than three references attesting to your  good character and/or suitability to receive the scholarship; and
  • Any other supporting documentation that would assist the Selection Committee in developing an opinion of you as an applicant.

When applying for a scholarship it is very important that you answer all the questions and include all relevant documents.  Your application and relevant documents must be submitted before the closing date. If an application is incomplete, it will not be considered.

What happens now?

Your application is checked for completeness and eligibility, and you will receive an email confirmation it has been received. After the closing date it will be individually assessed and put forward to a selection committee who will rank your application against others who have applied.

Applicants may be required to attend an interview as part of the selection process.

Nature of the Scholarship

The value of the scholarship is $5,000 paid in two equal instalments after census date of Study Period 2 then Study Period 1 of the following year that the scholarship is awarded.

Eligibility Criteria

The ITNewcom Foundation University Scholarship will be open to competition among applicants who:

  • are domestic students, i.e. Australian citizens; and
  • who identify as a member of an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community; and
  • enrolled full time in 1st or 2nd year of an undergraduate course in an Engineering or IT Course within the Division of Tropical Environments & Societies.  (Diploma of Higher Education not eligible)

Selection Criteria

The Selection Criteria are:

  • academic merit or potential;
  • content of the ITNewcom online application; and
  • the character of the candidate for the award; and
  • any other criteria that the Selection Committee deems appropriate, including whether the applicant has, or will receive any other scholarship assistance during their studies.

Application Procedures

Applications must be submitted on the official application form no later than the date set by the Selection Committee for the year in which the award is to be made.

Applicants must complete the ITNewcom application and submit the required documentation as indicated, which includes:

  • A signed Statutory Declaration confirming Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent; and
  • a written statement as part of the online ITNewcom application; and
  • a copy their Centrelink ABSTUDY statement; and
  • a copy of their Academic record or school report; and
  • no more than three references attesting to the applicants good character and/or suitability to receive the scholarship; and
  • Any other supporting documentation that would assist the Selection Committee in developing an opinion of you as an applicant.

Applications submitted without the relevant documentation will not be considered.

The applicant authorises the Selection Committee to make such enquiries as to the applicant’s good character and suitability to receive the bursary, which includes authorisation for the Selection Committee to examine the applicant’s academic record, and seek opinions from relevant members of the academic staff of this University or any other academic institution.

Selection Process

The award of the scholarship shall be made in the absolute discretion of the Selection Committee, which shall comprise:

  • ITNewcom Foundation member (chair), or nominee
  • Head, Indigenous Centre, or nominee
  • Head, Indigenous student support, or nominee; and
  • DVC, Academic Division, or nominee

The Selection Committee reserves the right:

  • not to award a Scholarship in any year, if in the opinion of the Selection Committee, there is no candidate of sufficient merit to warrant an award;

The Selection Committee may require applicants to undertake an interview as part of their application.
The Selection Committee will determine all matters relating to the selection of the Scholarship awardee.

Payment

Monies payable to the recipient of an award shall be paid in 2 instalments after the census date of Study Period 2 then Study Period 1 of the following year that the scholarship is awarded..

Ongoing Eligibility

  • The recipient must maintain a GPA of 4.0 or above.
  • Where the recipient fails to meet this requirement evidence of special circumstances contributing to the reduced GPA must be provided to the Selection Committee for consideration of ongoing eligibility.
  • Recipients of ITNewcom scholarship must provide a written progress report at the end of each semester which will be co-ordinated by the Scholarships Office on behalf of the Foundation.

Conditions of the Scholarship

  • If the recipient defers their study, the recipient will no longer be eligible for the award. Where an award is terminated pursuant to the provisions to this clause it may be awarded to another suitable applicant.
  • If the holder of an award fails to comply with any of these provisions or any provision relating to a particular award or with any conditions imposed under these provisions or the provisions relating to a particular award, the Selection Committee may terminate the award or withhold any further emoluments or take such action as it may deem necessary to enforce compliance with the provision or performance of the condition by the holder.
  • A student may lodge a request for review of decision in accordance with the provisions of the Student Complaints Policy and Procedures.
  • The requirements of the Scholarship shall not make the awarding of the Scholarship conditional upon the recipient providing unremunerated services or products to the donor.
  • In the event that the recipient suspends their study, the scholarship shall be suspended.

Administration of the Scholarship

  • The scholarship shall be administered by the Scholarships Office, on behalf of the Selection Committee.
  • The funds of the scholarship shall be held in an account in the name of the University and shall be administered by the officer of the University charged with administering the scholarship.
  • Where there is a fund maintaining the award, the annual value of the award shall be approximately equal to the annual income from the fund.
  • Income from a fund not expended on the award which it maintains, shall be added to and become part of the fund.
  • Where an award provides some benefit to the recipient from a body external to the University, or an obligation upon a body external to the University, the University, its servants and agents, shall not be liable for that benefit or obligation.

Definitions

Unless there appears a contrary intention in these rules:
award” means the scholarship;
awardee” means the recipient of a scholarship; and
candidate” means the person applying for the scholarship
