The JCU Lifelong Sport Engagement Program aims to foster a lasting connection to sport among university students in Townsville. Supported by Brothers Leagues Club Townsville and the Cowboys Leagues Club, the program provides $2,000 grants to students who demonstrate a strong commitment and level of expertise in their chosen sport. It encourages students to continue their sporting involvement alongside academic pursuits, particularly in the early years of university study. Grants are available to those competing at the highest level in North Queensland, as well as students involved in coaching or officiating—recognising the many ways individuals contribute to the sporting community.

The grants will be available for application by students studying any undergraduate degree at JCU who are enrolled fulltime at JCU’s Townsville campus.

This scholarship is subject to the provisions of the James Cook University Coursework Scholarships, Bursaries and Grants Policy

The JCU Lifelong Sport Engagement Program is open for you to apply if you:

  • Are a domestic student, i.e. Australian citizens, New Zealand citizens and holders of a permanent visa; and
  • Are enrolled full time in an undergraduate degree at the Townsville (Bebegu Yumba) Campus.

The value of the scholarship shall be $2,000.  The scholarship shall be paid in one lump sum up to 4 weeks after awarding.

Applications must be submitted on the official application form no later than the date set by the Selection Committee for the year in which the award is to be made. Applicants must submit with the official form, where appropriate:

  • A written statement outlining the following:
    1. The sport you play and what is involved
    2. Level of Athletic participation (International/National/State/Regional/Local)
    3. How long you have been playing your chosen sport
    4. Distance to participate in sporting events
    5. Your current course GPA
    6. If you are in financial need

Your application is checked for completeness and eligibility, and you will receive an email confirmation it has been received. After the closing date it will be individually assessed and put forward to a selection committee who will rank your application against others who have applied.

  1. Level of athletic participation
  2. Distance to participate in Sporting Events
  3. Enrolment status
  4. GPA (if applicable)
  5. Grew up in North Queensland
  6. Indigenous status
  7. Financial need

Application Procedures

Applications must be submitted on the official application form no later than the date set by the Selection Committee for the year in which the award is to be made.

The applicant authorises the Selection Committee to make such enquiries as to the applicant’s good character and suitability to receive the scholarship, which includes authorisation for the Selection Committee to examine the applicant’s academic record, and seek opinions from relevant members of the academic staff of this University or any other academic institution.

Selection Process

The award of the scholarship will be made in the absolute discretion of the Selection Committee, which shall comprise:

  • Members of the scholarship office;

The Selection Committee will determine all matters relating to the selection of the Scholarship awardee.

Conditions of the Scholarship

  • The student musts be enrolled full-time at the awarding and payment of the scholarship.
  • The student must provide a student impact report about how they used the funds to support them in their sporting life. A template will be sent to you.
  • A student may lodge a request for review of decision in accordance with the provisions of the Student Appeals Policy.

Administration of the Scholarship

The scholarship shall be administered by the scholarships office, on behalf of the Selection Committee.

The funds of the scholarship shall be held in an account in the name of the University and shall be administered by the officer of the University charged with administering the scholarship.

Where an award provides some benefit to the recipient from a body external to the University, or an obligation upon a body external to the University, the University, its servants and agents, shall not be liable for that benefit or obligation
