In 2016 the State of the Tropics Alliance welcomed the decision by the United Nations to declare 29th June as the International Day of the Tropics. The initiative was spearheaded by the Australian Government in close collaboration with JCU Vice Chancellor, Professor Sandra Harding, and the Alliance.

International Day of the Tropics provides an opportunity to take stock of progress across the tropics, to share tropical stories and expertise and to acknowledge the diversity and potential of the region.
