Students Support Student Mentor Program Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student Mentor Program

Cairns and Townsville Campuses

The Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student Mentor Program assists and supports Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in their first year at JCU. The program was established in Cairns in 2012 and commenced on the Townsville campus in 2015.

What we do

We focus on providing holistic support that specifically targets the academic and cultural needs of students to improve student participation, retention and strengthen an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community on campus.

New students are linked with a student mentor in the Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students’ Unistart program, held on the week before O Week (on both Cairns and Townsville Campuses). Unistart is a one-day program facilitated by our Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student Mentors. The mentors and facilitators will help you access information about the university, course subjects, support services and scholarships to help you succeed.

The Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Students’ Unistart is an extension of the two-day Unistart program. More information and short-course registration and application forms can be found online.

How we help you

Your ‘deadly mentor’ will keep in contact with you throughout your first semester and they will share their knowledge and experience of what helped them succeed at university. Your mentor can help with:

  • Finding your way around campus and the community
  • Informing you about support services
  • Effective strategies to approach your subjects
  • Getting organised for your study and assessment
  • Answering those questions you think are not important enough to ask your lecturer or university staff
  • Creating networks with other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and study groups

Deadly mentors remember what it was like to be a new student. They volunteer their time and are trained for their role. You will be able to recognise the mentors around campus with their bright red shirts.
