Prestigious award for high achiever

After falling in love with the culture and people of Vietnam, Genevieve Ritchie was determined to study there. A prestigious scholarship is going to turn that dream into a reality.

JCU student Genevieve Ritchie was awarded the prestigious New Colombo Plan (NCP) Scholarship at a presentation ceremony in Canberra this month.

The NCP scholarships are awarded annually by the Australian Government to support high-achieving undergraduate students to undertake further studies and industry internships across the Indo-Pacific region.

“I am excited to be an ambassador for Australia, North Queensland and James Cook University in the Indo-Pacific region,” says Genevieve.

Genevieve is completing her Bachelor of Business (Economics) and Bachelor of Psychological Science at JCU in Cairns after growing up on a farm in Mirriwinni in Far North Queensland.

Building relationships overseas

After high school, Genevieve spent close to a year in Vietnam and fell in love with the culture and people. During this time, she heard about the New Colombo Plan scholarship opportunities.

“I returned to Australia with the goal of applying to study in Vietnam, with plans to enter the field of behavioural economics,” she says. “This year I was nominated by James Cook University for the NCP scholarship, and am thrilled that I was successful.”

Genevieve will be studying economics and Vietnamese in the Hanoi and Saigon campuses of RMIT University Vietnam, and will also undertake internships at Vietnamese businesses in 2019.

“I believe that Vietnam is an important player in the Indo-Pacific region with a fast growing population and economy, and a strong manufacturing sector,” she says.

“I hope to increase the people-to-people relationships between both countries and help to facilitate business in Vietnam for Australian companies.”
