Showcasing the North

What can art tell us about a place? JCU Graduate Alison McDonald will showcase the possibilities in her new sculpture. She has been commissioned to create an artwork for the new Queensland Country Bank Stadium.

Alison’s artwork ‘Warmth’ showcases place names in North Queensland and brings them together in the form of a river. Alison drew inspiration from the wonderful community support shown throughout the floods.

The fictitious river depicted in the artwork connects North Queensland. The river is an important place where people have gathered and settled. The wrap around, circular form of the sculpture aims to capture and portray a communal embrace. Included are a selection of place names in English and published names of Indigenous groups, to recognise this coming together and to celebrate the warmth of the people in North Queensland.
