About the Maths Hub

The JCU Tropical Queensland Maths Hub website was developed by mathematicians for mathematicians in response to feedback from school principals, heads of mathematics departments and teachers of mathematics in northern Queensland. It draws on expertise and experience of the community, including those who teach the students of today and those who will employ the graduates of tomorrow.

The MEOW (Maths Explains Our World) on-campus workshops and new classroom resources give students the chance to see how people use secondary mathematics in their work and daily lives. See Maths Careers for inspiring videos and posters of Northern Queensland professionals, What’s On for links to competitions and events for North Queensland teachers and students, and Networking for ways to stay connected across our Northern Queensland Schools. Website evaluations will be carried out annually by invited stakeholders.

History

Mathematics educators from JCU, led by Associate Professor Shaun Belward and Dr Jo Balatti (retired) provided the inspiration to kick-start the initiative, supported by Dr Donna Rigano, Dr Leah Daniel and James Dalitz.

Going forward, support from the entire northern Queensland mathematics community will keep the website evolving and meeting the needs of mathematics educators in our region.

Funding for this initiative was provided by an Office for Learning and Teaching (OLT) grant, titled Inspiring Mathematics and Science in Teacher Education (IMSITE), and an Australian Maths and Science Partnership Program grant, The Queensland STEM Education Network (QSEN).
