Work Integrated Learning
Life can be an adventure, and study shouldn’t be any different. At James Cook University (JCU), you will have the opportunity to gain practical experience in a variety of workplace settings during your course, all around Australia and even overseas, through our Work Integrated Learning program.
Work Integrated Learning (WIL), is valuable practical experience which is directly related to your course at university. In your course, it might be called clinical placements, internships, volunteering opportunities or fieldwork.
JCU students will have WIL experiences throughout their degrees, ensuring full preparation for life in the workforce. Many of these experiences begin in your first year of study. At JCU we know industry or clinical experiences ensure our graduates are highly sought after upon graduation.
Every year, thousands of our student dentists, physiotherapists, doctors and other student health professionals provide real treatments to patients across our region. Our business students help to put on significant events such as the Australian Festival of Chamber Music in Townsville and assist industry with their plans and strategies. JCU student teachers are in classrooms, our engineers in mines and on construction sites. Our Information Technology (IT) students are working together on real problems for local businesses, and our Arts students are solving problems with community organisations through service learning initiatives. Even before they graduate, our students are ambassadors for JCU and contributing significantly in our communities.
We encourage our students to work in rural, remote, and underserved communities as well as tropical and major cities, in Australia and internationally. Many of you will have the opportunity to experience diverse parts of Australia gaining a wide variety of work and life skills in the process.
