Entry requirements for this course are consistent with the Pathways to Qualifications in the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF level 7) Guidelines for Bachelor degrees.

Minimum English Language Proficiency Requirements

Students of non English speaking backgrounds must have an adequate English language capacity assessed under the Australian International English Language Testing System (IELTS).  The IELTS score required for admission to this course can be found in Schedule II of the JCU Admissions policy.

Honours:

A candidate admitted to the degree of Bachelor of Arts – Bachelor of Social Work at this university may be invited by the Head of the School to undertake the Honours degree if that candidate has

  • obtained a minimum of 72 credit points by successful completion of the level 1, 2 and 3 subjects prescribed in Bachelor of Arts – Bachelor of Social Work

  • obtained a minimum of a Credit grade in four level 2 or level 3 social work subjects

  • obtained a minimum of a Distinction grade in at least two level 2 or level 3 social work subjects

Clinical placement/professional practice:

This course includes prescribed professional or clinical placements. Students may be required to undertake such placements away from the campus at which they are enrolled, at their own expense. (Note: health professional courses generally involve extensive professional or clinical placements).

Advanced Standing

Eligibility

Candidates may apply for advanced standing for previous tertiary study in accordance with the Advanced Standing for Previous Studies and Recognised Prior Learning policy associated procedures.

Currency

Advanced standing will be granted only for studies completed in the 20 years prior to the commencement of this course.

Expiry

Advanced standing gained for any subject shall be cancelled 20 years after the date of the examination upon which the advanced standing is based if, by then, the candidate has not completed this course.

Other restrictions

The Australian Association of Social Workers does not permit advanced standing to be given for field education undertaken in non-social work programs. However students with significant experience in the field may apply for Recognition of Prior Learning.

Students who have successfully completed the honours program shall be eligible for the award of Bachelor of Arts – Bachelor of Social Work with Honours

Honours availability

Honours is available in either or both disciplines.

Social Work honours is available within the BA-BSW course (see Eligibility section below for details).

Candidates must have:

Candidates must satisfy the School requirements relating to the standard of academic achievement necessary to proceed to the honours degree.
