Generative Artificial Intelligence
At James Cook University, we recognise that Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) is reshaping the way we teach, learn, and create knowledge. As a university deeply committed to equity, sustainability, and the respectful integration of Indigenous knowledge systems, we view GenAI not as a replacement for human thinking, but as a catalyst for creativity, collaboration, and critical inquiry.
This site empowers students and staff to engage with AI ethically and imaginatively, ensuring that our practices uphold academic integrity, foster digital literacy, and prepare graduates for a rapidly evolving world of work. We champion responsible innovation and invite our community to explore the possibilities of GenAI with curiosity, care, and courage.
Staff can now access JCU’s suite of AI resources directly from the Staff tab on the left, while students can find tailored AI learning resources under the Student tab. There is also a separate link for JCU AI Policies and Procedures.
This website represents a preliminary step toward a broader, co-created Knowledge Hub—a collaborative space where ideas, exemplars, and resources on AI in education will continue to grow through collective contribution.
Whether you're designing curriculum, preparing assessments, or learning to use AI tools like Copilot, this Hub is your space for support, experimentation, and shared learning.
Let’s shape the future of education—together, and with integrity.
Our Principles
These principles ensure AI use at JCU is aligned with our values and commitment to student and staff wellbeing, integrity, and innovation:
Transparency, Accountability & Contestability
AI use at JCU is transparent and always subject to human oversight. Mechanisms are in place for individuals to challenge decisions and provide feedback.
Human-Centred Design
AI should serve people—enhancing human rights, dignity, diversity, and inclusion. Technology must never override human autonomy.
Fairness & Inclusion
AI systems must be equitable, accessible, and designed to actively mitigate bias. We engage with diverse communities to ensure no one is left behind.
Privacy & Security
Robust safeguards protect sensitive data. AI systems must comply with JCU's Information Privacy and Security policies.
Reliability & Safety
All AI systems must be safe, dependable, and used only for their intended purpose. High-risk applications undergo detailed risk assessments.
Governance & Oversight
JCU has established clear roles—from Council and the Vice Chancellor to AI Product Owners—to guide, assess, and monitor all AI initiatives.
Staff, are you using a non-JCU AI tool?
Read this first: JCU recommends using the prescribed tools; do not upload teaching materials or student work to public / non-JCU AI tools.
Log in to Microsoft Copilot
By using your JCU credentials, you can interact with a GenAI tool safely, as the data is not stored and will not be used to train the models.
JCU Staff can join the AI CoP
The AI Community of Practice (AI CoP), as part of AI@JCU, aims to serve as a platform for sharing experiences, use cases, technical advances, and insights in the rapidly evolving field of Artificial Intelligence.
