Admission Requirements

Course pre-requisites

Entry requirements for this course are consistent with the Pathways to Qualifications in the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF level 8) Guidelines for Bachelor degrees.

A person may enrol in the Full-Time Honours degree if that person has:

  • Completed a recognised degree in Medicine from this, or another University, within the previous 5 years; and

  • Satisfied the school requirements relating to the standard of academic achievement necessary to proceed to an Honours degree.

A person may enrol in the Part-Time Honours degree if that person has:

  • Completed a recognised degree in Medicine from this, or another University, within the previous 5 years; and

  • Satisfied the school requirements relating to the standard of academic achievement necessary to proceed to an Honours degree.

OR

  • Currently enrolled in Year 6 of the James Cook University Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery pass degree and requesting to study concurrently, and

  • Satisfied the school requirements relating to the standard of academic achievement necessary to proceed to an Honours degree.

Quota restrictions on the number of places available may apply from time to time as determined by the School of Medicine and Dentistry.

Minimum English Language Proficiency Requirements

Students of non English speaking backgrounds must have an adequate English language capacity assessed under the Australian International English Language Testing System (IELTS).  The IELTS score required for admission to this course can be found in Schedule II of the JCU Admissions policy.

Additional selection requirements

Candidates who have a completed Medicine degree and are applying to study either full or part-time will normally be expected to have an overall grade point average of 5.0 (i.e. credit average) across their undergraduate degree and or a grade point average of 5.0 in the fourth year of their undergraduate degree, with credits or better in specific discipline areas.

Currently enrolled in Year 6 of the James Cook University Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery pass degree and who are applying to concurrently study part-time are expected to have an overall grade point average of 5.0 (i.e. credit average) across Years 2,3,4 and 5 of their undergraduate degree.

Entry to the program is by invitation of the Head of School, School of Medicine and Dentistry.
