Course pre-requisites

Completion of a bachelor degree, from this or another university; or

Other qualifications recognised by the Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the Faculty of Arts, Education and Social Science as equivalent to the above.

Minimum English Language Proficiency Requirements

Students of non-English speaking backgrounds must have an adequate English language capacity assessed under the Australian International English Language Testing System (IELTS). The IELTS score required for admission to this course can be found in Schedule I of the JCU Admissions policy.

Course Structure

Program is determined in consultation with the Head of School, School of Arts and Social Sciences.

The prescribed course may consist of coursework alone, or coursework together with a minor thesis of a minimum value of six credit points.

Supplementary exam for final subject

A candidate who has failed the final subject towards the award and who gained 40% or more of the marks for that subject, may be granted a supplementary examination in that subject. However if that subject is required for accreditation, then the criteria specified by that accreditation will apply.

Advanced Standing

Eligibility

Candidates may apply for advanced standing for previous tertiary study in accordance with the Advanced Standing for Previous Studies and Recognised Prior Learning policy associated procedures.

12 credit points

Currency

Advanced standing will be granted only for studies completed in the 10 years prior to the commencement of this course.

Expiry

Advanced standing gained for any subject shall be cancelled 13 years after the date of the examination upon which the advanced standing is based if, by then, the candidate has not completed the course of study prescribed for the Diploma.

Other restrictions

Candidates who are granted advanced standing for the Graduate Certificate of Arts are required to surrender that award prior to taking out the Graduate Diploma.

Exit with lesser award

Candidates who exit the course prior to completion, and have completed 12 credit points of study, may be eligible for the award of Graduate Certificate of Arts.

Course articulation

Candidates who complete the Graduate Diploma of Arts may apply for admission to the Master of Arts and, following surrender of the testamur for the Graduate Diploma of Arts, receive full advanced standing for subjects completed.
