Admission Requirements

Course pre-requisites

Completion of an appropriate undergraduate course at this or another University. Preference will be given to applicants with demonstrated experience or interest in international development practice.

Minimum English Language Proficiency Requirements

Students of non-English speaking backgrounds must have an adequate English language capacity assessed under the Australian International English Language Testing System (IELTS). The IELTS score required for admission to this course can be found in Schedule I of the JCU Admissions policy.

Additional completion requirements for the field components of the course include: immunization certificates for tetanus, hepatitis A, hepatitis B, typhoid fever.

Post admission requirements

Prior to undertaking the field components of the course, students must provide evidence of immunity to hepatitis B as well as immunisation certificates for tetanus, hepatitis A, and typhoid fever. JCU Infectious Diseases policy and Immunisation Guidelines.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion, graduates will be able to:

  • Engage with contemporary development practice theory and their applications

  • Work in cross-disciplinary teams using a variety of problem solving techniques from within the contemporary development practice field

  • Develop communication skills that facilitate co-operative working relations with government and non-government agencies in the field of development practice

  • Critically and holistically analyse development practice problems using cross-disciplinary approaches.

Advanced Standing

Eligibility

Candidates may apply for advanced standing for previous tertiary study in accordance with the Advanced Standing for Previous Studies and Recognised Prior Learning policy associated procedures.

Maximum allowed

12 credit points, unless part of an approved articulation process

Currency

Advanced standing will be granted only for studies completed in the 5 years prior to the commencement of this course.

Expiry

Advanced standing gained for any subject shall be cancelled 13 years after the date of the examination upon which the advanced standing is based if, by then, the candidate has not completed the course of study prescribed for the degree.
