Minimum English Language Proficiency Requirements

Students of non-English speaking backgrounds must have an adequate English language capacity assessed under the Australian International English Language Testing System (IELTS). The IELTS score required for admission to this course can be found in Schedule I of the JCU Admissions policy.

Learning outcomes

Graduates of the Master of Nursing degree will:

• Be able to communicate effectively and efficiently, including the ability to interpret and transmit both theoretical and practical knowledge, skills and ideas to specialist and non-specialist individuals and groups, such as consumers, key stakeholder groups and other members of the health care team.

• Be able to use expert judgement, adaptability and responsibility in the complex care of clients that incorporates relevant policy and budgetary directives.

• Be able to design and implement research and actively contribute to research projects that advance the body of knowledge in their clinical specialty.

• Be able to utilise the practice and processes of reflection and advocacy for both self-improvement and improvement in the quality of client care delivered in their specific clinical area.

• Be able to synthesise advanced theoretical and practical knowledge and exercise expert judgement to address specific complex problems within the health care system, taking into consideration the professional, legal and ethical responsibilities of nursing practice.

• Demonstrate, integrate and promulgate principles of cultural awareness and safety, professional regulation, economic and political issues as they relate to the diverse geographic, professional and clinical specialty contexts.

• Be able to deploy and evaluate existing and emerging technologies, including information literacy and clinical technologies, in the provision of complex patient care and the maintenance of high level communication in the workplace.

• Be able to safely and competently perform complex technical and/or clinical nursing skills in the delivery of appropriate client care across a broad range of clinical contexts.

• Be able to act as a role model and mentor to other less experienced clinicians and to student practitioners.

• Be able to act as a change agent and innovator by using creativity and initiative to continually improve the quality of care and the efficiency of the work unit.

18 credit points (consisting of maximum 12 credit points for previous studies; maximum of 6 credit points for >10yrs RN clinical experience).

Expiry

Advanced standing gained for any subject shall be cancelled 16 years after the date of the examination upon which the advanced standing is based if, by then, the candidate has not completed the course of study prescribed for the degree.

Exit with lesser award

Candidates who exit the course prior to completion, and have completed 24 credit points of appropriate subjects, may be eligible for the award of Postgraduate Diploma of Nursing.

Candidates who exit the course prior to completion, and have completed 12 credit points of appropriate subjects, may be eligible for the award of Postgraduate Certificate of Nursing.
