Admission Requirements

Course pre-requisites

Applicants must be registered as a nurse in Australia, and:

  • have completed to an appropriate standard a bachelor degree in a health related field at this or another university; or

  • have completed qualifications recognised as equivalent to the above; or

  • submit as an exceptional case, evidence of professional attainments including professional experience in nursing.

  • have concurrent employment minimum 0.5FTE in a Midwifery unit.

Minimum English Language Proficiency Requirements

Students of non-English speaking backgrounds must have an adequate English language capacity assessed under the Australian International English Language Testing System (IELTS). The IELTS score required for admission to this course can be found in Schedule II of the JCU Admissions policy.

Advanced Standing

Eligibility

Candidates may apply for advanced standing for previous tertiary study in accordance with the Advanced Standing for Previous Studies and Recognised Prior Learning policy associated procedures.

Maximum allowed

9 credit points, with the exception of candidates currently practising as endorsed midwives, who may be granted up to 12 credit points.

Currency

Advanced standing will be granted only for studies completed in the 5 years prior to the commencement of this course.

Expiry

Advanced standing gained for any subject shall be cancelled 9 years after the date of the examination upon which the advanced standing is based if, by then, the candidate has not completed the course of study prescribed for the degree.

Course articulation

Candidates who complete the Postgraduate Diploma of Midwifery are eligible for entry to the Master of Midwifery, and may be granted advanced standing for all subjects completed under the postgraduate diploma.
