Minimum English Language Proficiency Requirements

Students of non-English speaking backgrounds must have an adequate English language capacity assessed under the Australian International English Language Testing System (IELTS). The IELTS score required for admission to this course can be found in Schedule I of the JCU Admissions policy.

Additional selection requirements

Relevant professional experience, typically five years but must be a minimum of two years.

Special admission requirements

The course is conducted in collaboration with Charles Darwin University and the University of Queensland.  Students are expected to enrol in subjects at partner institutions

Course Structure

Core Subjects

PD7636 Professional Doctorate Research Portfolio (Tropical Environmental Management)

The candidate must submit a portfolio of research based on the equivalent of at least two years full-time research.  The research topic(s) will have an applied management and/or multidisciplinary focus.

The research portfolio will normally include:

(1) the outputs (preferably in the form of published or in press research papers) of a research project - equivalent to 18 months full-time (with 6 months placement) or two years full-time (with no placement), plus

(2) a synthesising introduction and discussion.

Note: If the 18 month research project option is chosen, the research outputs must also include the outputs arising from a one semester (full-time equivalent) professional placement (to be approved by the Course Coordinator).

Options

Select 24 credit points of any level 5 or 6 subjects in a field of study that will complement existing professional experience or qualifications and research portfolio (as approved by the Course Coordinator).  This may include approved subjects from other universities such as Charles Darwin University and the University of Queensland.

Advanced Standing

Eligibility

A person admitted to candidature on the basis of previous enrolment in a Masters degree relevant to the proposed Doctoral program, may be given advanced standing for work towards the Masters degree. In exceptional cases advanced standing may be given to a candidate for relevant research work undertaken at another university.

Maximum allowed

The amount of advanced standing to be awarded shall be determined by the RESC on the recommendation of the Head of the School.

Other restrictions

The University will not normally accept a candidate who has been enrolled at another institution for more than two years (full-time equivalent) or release a candidate who has been enrolled for more than two years (full-time equivalent).

Award Details

Inclusion of field of research on testamur

The field of research shall not appear on the testamur.

Exit with a lesser award

After examination of the thesis, and subject to the requirements under University Requirements - Research Doctorate Degrees, the RESC may approve the degree be not awarded but that the candidate be awarded an appropriate Masters degree.
