Admission Requirements

Course pre-requisites

Bachelor degree in any field of study at this or another University.

Minimum English Language Proficiency Requirements

Students of non-English speaking backgrounds must have an adequate English language capacity assessed under the Australian International English Language Testing System (IELTS). The IELTS score required for admission to this course can be found in Schedule II of the JCU Admissions policy.

Honours Program Requirements:

Entry to the Honours program is by invitation of the Head of School of Law

Current enrolment in Level 3 of the James Cook University Bachelor of Laws (Graduate Entry) pass degree, with an overall grade point average of 5.0 (i.e. credit average) in this degree

Accreditation requirements

1. In accordance with the requirements of the Supreme Court (Admission) Rules 2004 (QLD), students who intend, at any time, to seek admission as a Legal Practitioner in Queensland must include as subjects within their degree:

LA4038:03 Legal Ethics and Trust Accounting

2. Students seeking admission to practice are strongly advised to include the following level 4 subjects:

LA4007:03 Succession

LA4019:03   Conveyancing and Drafting

LA4032:03   Family Law

3. Townsville students seeking admission to practice are also encouraged to include LA4014:03 Clinical Legal Studies.

Supplementary exam for final subject

A candidate who has failed the final subject towards the award and who gained 40% or more of the marks for that subject, may be granted a supplementary examination in that subject. However if that subject is required for accreditation, then the criteria specified by that accreditation will apply.

Advanced Standing

Eligibility

Candidates may apply for advanced standing for previous tertiary study in accordance with the Advanced Standing for Previous Studies and Recognised Prior Learning policy associated procedures.

Currency

Advanced standing will be granted only for studies completed in the 10 years prior to the commencement of this course.

Expiry

Advanced standing gained for any subject shall be cancelled 20 years after the date of the examination upon which the advanced standing is based if, by then, the candidate has not completed this course.

Other restrictions

A maximum of 18 credit points of advanced standing may be granted at level 3 or 4.
