Admission Requirements

Course pre-requisites

Completion of a three year degree or diploma from this or another University; and

Completion of an approved course of teacher education.

In exceptional cases, applicants may be admitted to the course if they submit other evidence of academic and professional attainments.

Minimum English Language Proficiency Requirements

Students of non-English speaking backgrounds must have an adequate English language capacity assessed under the Australian International English Language Testing System (IELTS). The IELTS score required for admission to this course can be found in Schedule I of the JCU Admissions policy.

Course learning outcomes

On successful completion of the Graduate Certificate of Education, graduates will be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of recent developments, discourses and debates in the field of education and communication

  • Demonstrate knowledge, critical inquiry and action learning principles applicable to education research and related areas of professional practice

  • Identify and generate practical and research-informed solutions to complex problems in a range of education contexts, with responsibility, autonomy, well-developed judgement and adaptability

  • Communicate complex knowledge and ideas clearly and coherently to a variety of audiences through high-level speaking, reading, writing, listening and advocacy skills.

Advanced Standing

Eligibility

Candidates may apply for advanced standing for previous tertiary study in accordance with the Advanced Standing for Previous Studies and Recognised Prior Learning policy associated procedures.

Currency

Advanced standing will be granted only for studies completed in the 10 years prior to the commencement of this course.

Expiry

Advanced standing gained for any subject shall be cancelled 12 years after the date of the examination upon which the advanced standing is based if, by then, the candidate has not completed the course of study prescribed for the degree.
