Admission Requirements

Course pre-requisites

Completion of an AQF level 7 bachelor degree from this or another university.

Minimum English Language Proficiency Requirements

Students of non-English speaking backgrounds must have an adequate English language capacity assessed under the Australian International English Language Testing System (IELTS). The IELTS score required for admission to this course can be found in Schedule I of the JCU Admissions policy.

Additional selection requirements

Candidates will normally have a Distinction average in at least 21 credit points at third year level in their major discipline; and

Special admission requirements

Will have obtained at least a Credit in any undergraduate research methods subjects relevant to their intended masters program.

Additional course rules

Candidates shall enrol in a pilot study for their intended master’s project as a minor project subject within the Graduate Certificate program.

Graduates of the Graduate Certificate of Research Methods will be able to:

  • Demonstrate the application of contemporary, specialised knowledge and skills in clinical or health- related research methods in the conduct of a research project, with some independence

  • Conduct a research project using specialised knowledge and technical skills, including data collection and qualitative or quantitative research methods, with independence

  • Interpret and apply established and evolving evidence in the design of a research project

  • Apply knowledge and understanding of research ethics to prepare a successful ethics application for a research project

  • Demonstrate a high standard of ethical conduct in their research exercising autonomy, responsibility, accountability and well‐developed judgement

  • Communicate specialised knowledge, ideas and arguments accurately, coherently and creatively to a variety of audiences through written manuscripts and oral presentations

  • Demonstrate responsibility and accountability for future professional development requirements based on reflection on current skills, knowledge and attitudes.

Course Structure

The program is determined in consultation with the relevant Head of School, to enable the candidate to complete the University’s Confirmation of Candidature requirements for a Masters by Research degree.
