Minimum English Language Proficiency Requirements

Students of non-English speaking backgrounds must have an adequate English language capacity assessed under the Australian International English Language Testing System (IELTS). The IELTS score required for admission to this course can be found in Schedule I of the JCU Admissions policy.

Course learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of the Master of Public Health, graduates will be able to:

• Critically assess, analyse and communicate public health information relevant to tropical, rural, remote and Indigenous communities;

• Devise appropriate strategies to detect, prevent and control communicable and non-communicable diseases ensuring safe and healthy environments for tropical, rural, remote and Indigenous communities;

• Critically reflect upon the socioecological nature of health promotion and its application in optimising the health and wellbeing of tropical, rural, remote and Indigenous communities;

• Apply advanced human, project and organisational management skills within a public health and policy context which lead to efficient and equitable gains in public health; and

• Critically reflect upon and engage in professional public health practice based on ethical decision-making using an evidence based approach.

• Upon successful completion of the course, graduates will apply knowledge of research principles and methods to design, evaluate, analyse and implement contemporary public health practice or scholarship.

Graduates with a Health Promotion major will also be able to:

• Critically apply advanced skills in assessing population health need;s and to plan, implement and evaluate health promotion initiatives to optimise the health and wellbeing of tropical, rural, remote and Indigenous communities.

Graduates with a Biosecurity and Disaster Preparedness major will also be able to:

• Demonstrate professional public health practice before, during and after natural, man-made and humanitarian disasters.

Graduates with an Aeromedical Retrieval major will also be able to:

• Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the epidemiology, history, physiological effects, and management of patients undergoing aeromedical retrieval in a range of aircraft and settings including the impact of ethical, cultural, legal and financial issues.

Graduate with a Communicable Diseases major will also be able to:

• Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the principles for and practices of communicable disease control, how to plan, implement and evaluate successful disease control programs relevant to tropical, rural, remote and Indigenous communities.

Expiry

Advanced standing gained for any subject shall be cancelled 18 years after the date of the examination upon which the advanced standing is based if, by then, the candidate has not completed this course.

Exit with lesser award

Candidates who exit the course prior to completion, and have completed 12 credit points of appropriate subjects, may be eligible to receive the award of Graduate Certificate of Public Health.

Special awards

Where the coursework is completed at a grade point average of 6 or above, the Pro-Vice-Chancellor, on the recommendation of the Head of the School of Public Health, Tropical Medicine and Rehabilitation Sciences, may recommend the award of a Master of Public Health with Distinction.
