Admission Requirements

Course pre-requisites

Completion of a pass degree in Biomedical Sciences, from this or another university, that satisfies the School requirements relating to the necessary standard of academic achievement.

Minimum English Language Proficiency Requirements

Students of non-English speaking backgrounds must have an adequate English language capacity assessed under the Australian International English Language Testing System (IELTS). The IELTS score required for admission to this course can be found in Schedule II of the JCU Admissions policy.

Honours studies shall normally follow on directly from the pass degree and no later than two years following completion of the pass degree.

Post admission requirements

Hepatitis B immunisation:

Students must provide evidence of being immune to hepatitis B within the first teaching period of their studies. A blood-borne viral disease may result in a student’s inability to obtain a placement in a Queensland Health facility and consequently may result in their inability to complete the requirements of the course as accredited by the relevant professional accrediting body. If a student has not complied with the above requirement by the last day of the first teaching period of their studies, their enrolment will be terminated immediately.

Course learning outcomes

On successful completion of the Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Honours), graduates will be able to:

  • Integrate and apply a coherent and advanced body of theoretical and technical knowledge and skills, with depth in the underlying principles and concepts in the disciplines of Biomedicine

  • Critically review, analyse, synthesise and evaluate evidence and scientific literature to identify and propose solutions to complex problems with intellectual independence

  • Apply knowledge of research principles to plan and execute a piece of scientific research with some independence

  • Convey information, arguments and conclusions through advanced English language and numeracy proficiency, verbal presentation skills & computer literacy (including word processing, databases, graphics and statistical packages) to a variety of audiences

  • Reflect on current skills, knowledge and attitudes, in order to plan and implement ongoing personal and professional development needs and identify opportunities for lifelong learning.
