Minimum English Language Proficiency Requirements

Students of non-English speaking backgrounds must have an adequate English language capacity assessed under the Australian International English Language Testing System (IELTS). The IELTS score required for admission to this course can be found in Schedule II of the JCU Admissions policy.

Additional course rules

A maximum of 30 credit points may be taken at level 1.

A minimum of 36 credit points must be taken at level 3.

Additional completion requirements

Candidates are required to spend at least two teaching periods in an approved immersion program in countries where the languages of study are spoken.

Course learning outcomes

On successful completion of the Bachelor of Languages, graduates will be able to:

  • Demonstrate a broad and coherent body of knowledge of the linguistic features and key cultural aspects of the target language at Level 2 as described by the International Second Language Proficiency Ratings scale (ISLPR)

  • Review critically, analyse, consolidate and synthesise knowledge in both the target language and in English using a range of materials that encompasses varying degrees of language complexity

  • Present a clear, coherent and independent exposition of the knowledge and ideas in both the target language and in English

  • Demonstrate initiative and judgement in planning, problem solving and decision making in scholarship, the language immersion year and where applicable professional practice

  • Adapt linguistic and cultural knowledge and skills in diverse contexts, including the tropics, as a basis for independent lifelong learning

  • Embrace difference, behave responsibly and demonstrate international mindedness when working in collaboration with others.

Candidates are required to spend at least two teaching periods in an approved immersion program in  countries where the languages of study are spoken.  Students must meet JCU’s eligibility criteria in order to be eligible to study at an exchange partner university.  Students may apply to participate in the Student Exchange Program as part of the immersion program.

Advanced Standing

Eligibility

Candidates may apply for advanced standing for previous tertiary study in accordance with the Advanced Standing for Previous Studies and Recognised Prior Learning policy associated procedures.

Currency

Advanced standing will be granted only for studies completed in the 10 years prior to the commencement of this course.

Expiry

Advanced standing gained for any subject shall be cancelled 20 years after the date of the examination upon which the advanced standing is based if, by then, the candidate has not completed this course.
