Award Requirements

Admission Requirements

Course pre-requisites

Completion of a recognised degree in Medicine (or qualifications recognised by the Faculty as equivalent) from this, or another University, within the previous 5 years; and

Achievement of an overall grade point average of 5.0 (i.e. credit average) across their undergraduate degree and/or a grade point average of 5.0 in the fourth year of their undergraduate degree, with credits or better in specific discipline areas.

Current enrolment in Level 6 of the James Cook University Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery pass degree and requesting to study concurrently, and

Achievement of an overall grade point average of 5.0 (i.e. credit average) across levels 2, 3, 4 and 5 of their undergraduate degree.

Minimum English Language Proficiency Requirements

Students of non-English speaking backgrounds must have an adequate English language capacity assessed under the Australian International English Language Testing System (IELTS). The IELTS score required for admission to this course can be found in Schedule II of the JCU Admissions policy.

Additional selection requirements

Entry to the program is by invitation of the Head of School, School of Medicine and Dentistry.

Quota restrictions on the number of Honours places available may apply from time to time as determined by the School of Medicine and Dentistry.

Students who enrol in level 5 of the JCU MBBS program will be required to complete the requirements of the MBBS program before the MBBS (Honours) will be awarded.

Course learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of the Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery with Honours (Graduate), graduates will be able to:

  • Apply coherent and advanced knowledge of the underlying principles and concepts in medical science

  • Demonstrate knowledge and skills in quantitative and/or qualitative research approaches through critical analysis, evaluation and application of the relevant approach

  • Design and successfully conduct well designed research projects that are ethically and culturally safe and empowering in partnership with relevant collaborators

  • Critically evaluate own capabilities as developing researchers to enable structured further learning

  • Communicate a clear and coherent exposition of knowledge and ideas to a variety of audiences.
