Students of non-English speaking backgrounds must have an adequate English language capacity assessed under the Australian International English Language Testing System (IELTS). The IELTS score required for admission to this course can be found in Schedule II of the JCU Admissions policy.

Course learning outcomes

On successful completion of the Bachelor of Multimedia Journalism, graduates will be able to:

  • Demonstrate broad and coherent knowledge of key theoretical concepts and principles, methodologies and technical applications in the field of multimedia journalism

  • Review critically, analyse, consolidate and synthesise ideas and information for various audiences

  • Present a clear, coherent and independent exposition of knowledge and ideas through multimedia journalistic writing, production for print and/or broadcasting and/or online and work-based learning

  • Evaluate multimedia products to identify and/or revise examples of industry standard work within the journalism profession

  • Make informed decision and identify and solve problems independently and collaboratively in teams, with well-developed judgement and responsiveness to deadlines

  • Plan and manage projects, provide specialist advice and functions, and take responsibility for professional learning within the newsroom and across diverse media platforms and professional contexts.

Supplementary exam for final subject

A candidate who has failed a single subject towards the award in their final teaching period and who gained 40% or more of the marks for that subject may be granted a supplementary examination in that subject. However if that subject is required for accreditation, then the criteria specified by that accreditation will apply.

Advanced Standing

Eligibility

Candidates may apply for advanced standing for previous tertiary study in accordance with the Advanced Standing for Previous Studies and Recognised Prior Learning policy associated procedures.

Currency

Advanced standing will be granted only for studies completed in the 5 years prior to the commencement of this course.

Expiry

Advanced standing gained for any subject shall be cancelled 15 years after the date of the examination upon which the advanced standing is based if, by then, the candidate has not completed the course of study prescribed for the degree.

Other restrictions

A maximum of 9 credit points of advanced standing may be granted at level 3.
