Minimum English Language Proficiency Requirements

Students of non-English speaking backgrounds must have an adequate English language capacity assessed under the Australian International English Language Testing System (IELTS). The IELTS score required for admission to this course can be found in Schedule II of the JCU Admissions policy.

Post admission requirements

A candidate admitted to the degree of Bachelor of Psychology at this university may be invited by the Head of the School to undertake the Honours degree if that candidate has

  • obtained a minimum of 72 credit points by successful completion of the level 1, 2 and 3 subjects prescribed in Bachelor of Psychology

  • obtained a minimum of a Credit average (65%) across PY2103, PY2107 and a minimum of a Distinction average (75%) across 15 credit points of level 3 PY subjects, including PY3101

Course learning outcomes

On successful completion of the Bachelor of Psychology, graduates will be able:

  • Integrate a broad and coherent body of knowledge with depth in major theoretical perspectives and concepts, and philosophical and historical developments, in the core areas of psychology

  • Apply knowledge of research principles, methods and ethics to design and conduct scientific investigations that address psychological questions

  • Review and reflect on the ethics and efficacy of professional practice, interventions and interactions

  • Analyse, synthesise and evaluate knowledge and evidence bases underpinning professional practice

  • Apply well-developed English language, and technological and numeracy skills to generate, interpret and communicate knowledge, data, arguments and research findings

  • Exercise judgement and initiative to identify and solve problems, make informed decisions and plan ongoing professional learning within diverse research and/or professional practice contexts.

  • Adapt and apply research skills and psychological understanding, including where appropriate knowledge of cultural diversity, to investigate complex human behaviour with some independence.

Advanced Standing

Eligibility

Candidates may apply for advanced standing for previous tertiary study in accordance with the Advanced Standing for Previous Studies and Recognised Prior Learning policy associated procedures.

Currency

Advanced standing will be granted only for studies completed in the 10 years prior to the commencement of this course.

Expiry

Advanced standing gained for any subject shall be cancelled 18 years after the date of the examination upon which the advanced standing is based if, by then, the candidate has not completed this course.

Other restrictions

A maximum of 18 credit points of advanced standing may be granted at level 3 or 4.
