Minimum English Language Proficiency Requirements

Students of non-English speaking backgrounds must have an adequate English language capacity assessed under the Australian International English Language Testing System (IELTS). The IELTS score required for admission to this course can be found in Schedule I of the JCU Admissions policy.

Course learning outcomes

On successful completion of the Bachelor of Social Science graduates will be able to:

• Demonstrate broad and coherent interdisciplinary knowledge of social theory, practice and professional ethics in the social sciences

• Explain and interpret social systems, institutions, structures and practices

• Critically review perspectives, arguments and sources of knowledge pertinent to social, political, historical, economic, environmental and cultural issues, particularly those related to quality of life in the tropics worldwide

• Gather, synthesise and critically evaluate qualitative and quantitative data

• Construct and present logical arguments through well-developed literacy and numeracy skills, to a range of audiences

• Autonomously and collaboratively design and execute basic social science research projects

• Apply social theory to research, demonstrating conceptual understanding of the relationship between theory and practice

• Respectfully and responsibly apply knowledge of diversity and difference among people, especially vulnerable and Indigenous peoples, in scholarship and/or professional practice

• Adapt and apply knowledge and skills to identify problems and pose solutions to social and/or environmental challenges facing peoples and societies in diverse tropical contexts worldwide.

Expiry

Advanced standing gained for any subject shall be cancelled 20 years after the date of the examination upon which the advanced standing is based if, by then, the candidate has not completed this course.

Exit with lesser award

Candidates who exit the course prior to completion, and have completed 24 credit points of study and appropriate subjects, may be eligible to receive the award of Diploma of Arts.
