Course pre-requisites

Completion of a pass degree in Social Work, or an equivalent degree, from this or another university.

Minimum English Language Proficiency Requirements

Students of non-English speaking backgrounds must have an adequate English language capacity assessed under the Australian International English Language Testing System (IELTS). The IELTS score required for admission to this course can be found in Schedule I of the JCU Admissions policy.

Additional selection requirements

Candidates must have completed the pass degree to a standard that justifies candidature for honours.

Course learning outcomes

On successful completion of the Bachelor of Social Work with Honours, graduates will be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of a coherent and advanced body of knowledge, with depth in the underlying values, ethics, theories, professional practice and workplace contexts in the social work discipline

  • Demonstrate knowledge of research principles and methods in the social work discipline

  • Analyse critically and transform complex social systems, institutions, structures, processes, practices and inequities

  • Consolidate, synthesise, evaluate and transform social policy and evidence to devise practical and knowledge solutions that reduce social barriers, inequalities and injustice

  • Communicate social work research, knowledge processes, practice and ethics clearly and coherently through advanced literacy and, where appropriate, numeracy and/or technological skills to a range of audiences

  • Design, plan and execute a research project with some independence

  • Demonstrate initiative and well-developed judgement and adaptability in engagement, planning, decision-making, problem-solving, and provision and evaluation of specialist advice and functions, to achieve practice, organisational and/or policy outcomes

  • Demonstrate responsibility and accountability for own learning and professional development.
