Admission Requirements

Course pre-requisites	Completion of an AQF level 7 bachelor degree in Dentistry from this, or another University, within the previous 5 years; and Achievement of an overall grade point average of 5.0 (i.e. credit average) across their undergraduate degree and/or a grade point average of 5.0 in the Level 4 of their undergraduate degree, with credits or better in specific discipline areas. or Current enrolment in Level 5 of the James Cook University Bachelor of Dental Surgery pass degree and requesting to concurrently study Honours part-time, and Achievement of an overall grade point average of 5.0 (i.e. credit average) across Levels 2, 3 and 4 of their undergraduate degree, with credits or better in the discipline specific areas.
Minimum English language proficiency requirements	Applicants of non-English speaking backgrounds must meet the English language proficiency requirements of Band 3b – Schedule II of the JCU Admissions Policy. Students also need to take note that in accordance with the National Registration Board’s requirement, they must hold a valid IELTS (academic module) minimum score of 7.0 in all components within 2 years prior to applying for registration
Additional selection requirements	Application for entry to the program is by approval of the College Dean. Quota restrictions on the number of honours places available may apply from time to time as determined by the College Dean.

Post admission requirements	Depending on the area of research, students may have to comply with the following: Hepatitis B immunisation: Students must provide evidence of being immune to hepatitis B within the first teaching period of their studies. A blood-borne viral disease may result in a student’s inability to obtain a placement in a Queensland Health facility and consequently may result in their inability to complete the requirements of the course as accredited by the relevant professional accrediting body. If a student has not complied with the above requirement by the last day of the first teaching period of their studies, their enrolment will be terminated immediately. For more information, refer to : Infectious Diseases Policy and Immunisation Guidelines Yearly influenza immunisation: Recommended Suitability to Work with Children Card (blue card): This course includes prescribed professional or clinical placements that may involve contact with children under 18 years of age. Students are required to obtain a Suitability to Work with Children Card (which involves a criminal history check undertaken by the Queensland Police) before the start of the first placement. Students must retain a current Suitability to Work with Children Card for the duration of their course, as failure to do so will result in the termination of their admission to the course. For more information, refer to: Blue Card Services Current Apply First Aid and CPR Certificate: Students must hold a current First Aid Certificate before undertaking professional or clinical placements. Students are responsible for any costs associated with obtaining this certificate. Some professional/clinical placement agencies may require that students hold an advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certificate before undertaking a professional or clinical placement. Students are responsible for any costs associated with obtaining this certificate. Australian Federal Police check: This course includes prescribed professional or clinical placements. Some placement agencies will require students to produce a current Australian Federal Police check. This is in addition to the requirements for a Blue Card. Students must provide written confirmation of clearance to the Clinical Placement Officer prior to commencement of clinical placement. Additional completion requirements	Students who enrol in Level 5 of the JCU BDS program will be required to complete the requirements of the BDS program before the BDS (Honours) will be awarded.
Course learning outcomes	Following successful completion of Bachelor of Dental Surgery (Honours), graduates will be able to: Integrate and apply a coherent and advanced body of theoretical and technical knowledge and skills with depth in the underlying principles and concepts in the discipline of dentistry Critically review, analyse, synthesise and evaluate evidence to identify and provide solutions to complex problems with intellectual independence Convey information, arguments and conclusions to specialist and non‐specialist audiences, demonstrating advanced proficiency in English language and, where appropriate, numeracy Apply knowledge of research principles and methods to plan and execute project work and/or a piece of research and scholarship with some independence Identify and act upon opportunities for life‐long learning as a strategy to promote professional development of self, others and the discipline of dentistry.
