Course pre-requisites

Completion of an AQF Level 7 Bachelor of Languages, or equivalent degree, majoring in French within the previous five years; and

Achievement of an overall grade point average of 5.0 (i.e. credit average) across their bachelor degree, with credits or better in discipline-specific areas.

Minimum English language proficiency requirements

Applicants of non-English speaking backgrounds must meet the English language proficiency requirements of Band 1 Schedule II of the JCU Admissions Policy.

Additional selection requirements

Application for entry to the program is by approval of the College Dean.

Quota restrictions on the number of honours places available may apply from time to time as determined by the College Dean.

Students who have graduated with a pass degree from this or another university or who graduated more than five years ago may be required to complete such coursework or assessment as the College Dean recommends.

Course learning outcomes

On successful completion of the Bachelor of Languages (Honours), graduates will be able to:

  • Demonstrate advanced linguistic and cultural knowledge and skills of the target language at Level 3 as described by the International Second Language Proficiency Ratings scale (ISLPR)

  • Review critically, analyse, consolidate and synthesise knowledge in both the target language and in English using a range of materials that encompasses varying degrees of language complexity

  • Transmit a clear, coherent and independent exposition of the knowledge and ideas in both the target language and in English

  • Demonstrate initiative and judgement in planning, problem-solving and decision-making in scholarship

  • Adapt linguistic and cultural knowledge and skills in diverse contexts, including the tropics, as a basis for independent lifelong learning

  • Design, plan and execute a research-based project with some autonomy

  • Embrace difference, behave responsibly and demonstrate international-mindedness when working in collaboration with others.
