Course pre-requisites

Completion of an undergraduate teaching degree, from this or another university; or

Completion of 72 credit points of the Bachelor of Education from this university; or

Other qualifications recognised by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the Division of Tropical Environments and Societies as equivalent to the above.

Applicants of non-English speaking backgrounds must meet the English language proficiency requirements of Band 2 Schedule II of the JCU Admissions Policy.

Course learning outcomes

On successful completion of the Graduate Certificate of Catholic Education, graduates will be able to:

  • Know, understand and make independent judgements about the theological concepts fundamental to the sacramental and liturgical dimensions of Catholic tradition

  • Analyse, reason, and deploy evidence clearly, logically and practically in the study of the principles of interpretation concerning the books of the bible (Biblical hermeneutics) and in the place and use of the scriptures in the Catholic tradition

  • Acquire a coherent set of Religious Education curriculum skills, and theological understanding and initiate, plan and evaluate teaching and learning practices associated with teaching religious education in a Catholic school

  • Reflect on and evaluate their understanding of issues that underpin the role of spirituality and values in living and particularly in teaching, including speaking coherently and concisely about theories of moral development and their implications for teaching religious education

  • Identify and generate practical and knowledge solutions to complex problems in a range of Catholic religious education contexts, with creativity, responsibility, autonomy, well-developed judgement and adaptability

  • Communicate complex knowledge and ideas clearly and coherently to a variety of audiences through high-level speaking, reading, writing, listening and advocacy skills.

Eligibility

Students may apply for advanced standing for previous tertiary study in accordance with the Advanced Standing and Articulation policy and associated procedures.

Advanced standing will be granted only for studies completed in the 10 years prior to the commencement of this course.

Expiry

Advanced standing gained for any subject shall be cancelled 12 years after the date of the examination upon which the advanced standing is based if, by then, the student has not completed the course of study prescribed for the degree.
