Registration as a nurse, doctor of medicine or other health professional in Australia; or

Completion of an appropriate AQF level 7 bachelor degree in a relevant discipline with 2 years relevant experience or equivalent.

Applicants of non-English speaking backgrounds must meet the English language proficiency requirements of Band 3aSchedule II of the JCU Admissions Policy.

Course learning outcomes

The Graduate Certificate in Health Professional Education enables health professionals working in regional and remote tropical Australia to complete a postgraduate qualification to enhance their teaching and learning skills with undergraduate health students whom they teach and supervise.

They will develop knowledge, skills and attitudes to deliver best practice teaching and learning opportunities for students in the health professions. They will possess expertise in improving teaching and learning opportunities for students training in a range of professions across the health sector and will be committed to responsible, ethical and professional conduct in lead roles as educators. Graduates will work to foster their practice through professional development and the application of evidence-based practice.

Graduates of the Graduate Certificate of Health Professional Education will be able to:

  • Apply advanced knowledge of educational theoretical concepts, studentā€centred and adult learning principles, and evidence-based techniques for teaching and learning in clinical practice contexts

  • Plan, implement and evaluate learning, teaching and assessment experiences, with an emphasis on reflective practice, to learning and teaching in a clinical context

  • Apply an evidence-based approach through action research skills in health professional education

  • Interpret and apply principles, theories and methods of medical/health professional education through high-level written and spoken English

  • Demonstrate personal autonomy and accountability for own professional development as an educator.

Eligibility

Students may apply for advanced standing for previous tertiary study in accordance with the Advanced Standing and Articulation policy and associated procedures.

Advanced standing will be granted only for studies completed in the 5 years prior to the commencement of this course.

Expiry

Advanced standing gained for any subject shall be cancelled 8 years after the date of the examination upon which the advanced standing is based if, by then, the student has not completed the course of study prescribed for the degree.
