Course pre-requisites

Completion of an AQF level 7 bachelor degree in nursing, or equivalent qualification, and eligibility for nurse registration in Australia.

Minimum English Language Proficiency Requirements

Applicants of non-English speaking backgrounds must meet the English language proficiency requirements of Band 3aSchedule II of the JCU Admissions Policy.

Additional selection requirements

Applicants must have completed a minimum of one year of full-time clinical experience (or part-time equivalent) as a registered nurse.

Special admission requirements

For flexible delivery option, computer and internet access is required.

Closing date

June 1 or January 1 of each year.  Students can commence in TP1 or TP2.

Course learning outcomes

Graduates of the Master of Nursing degree will be able to:

  • Communicate effectively and efficiently, including the ability to interpret and transmit both theoretical and practical knowledge, skills and ideas to specialist and non-specialist individuals and groups, such as consumers, key stakeholder groups and other members of the health care team

  • Use expert judgement, adaptability and responsibility in the complex care of clients that incorporates relevant policy and budgetary directives.

  • Design and implement research and actively contribute to research projects that advance the body of knowledge in their clinical specialty

  • Utilise the practice and processes of reflection and advocacy for both self-improvement and improvement in the quality of client care delivered in their specific clinical area

  • Synthesise advanced theoretical and practical knowledge and exercise expert judgement to address specific complex problems within the health care system, taking into consideration the professional, legal and ethical responsibilities of nursing practice

  • Demonstrate, integrate and promulgate principles of cultural awareness and safety, professional regulation, economic and political issues as they relate to the diverse geographic, professional and clinical specialty contexts

  • Deploy and evaluate existing and emerging technologies, including information literacy and clinical technologies, in the provision of complex patient care and the maintenance of high level communication in the workplace

  • Safely and competently perform complex technical and/or clinical nursing skills in the delivery of appropriate client care across a broad range of clinical contexts

  • Act as role models and mentors to other less experienced clinicians and to student practitioners

  • Act as change agents and innovators by using creativity and initiative to continually improve the quality of care and the efficiency of the work unit.

Eligibility

Students may apply for exemption for previous tertiary study where appropriate in accordance with the Advanced Standing and Articulation policy and associated procedures.

18 credit points (maximum 12 credit points for formal studies; maximum of 6 credit points for Recognised Prior Learning [RPL]

Currency

Advanced standing will be granted only for studies completed in the 10 years prior to the commencement of this course.

Expiry

Advanced standing gained for any subject shall be cancelled 16 years after the date of the examination upon which the advanced standing is based if, by then, the student has not completed the course of study prescribed for the degree.
