Graduates of this course, who wish to become fully registered as psychologists, must complete an accredited fourth year course (e.g. BPsychSc(Hons) or GDipPsych) plus two years of supervised practice in the field; or an accredited masters degree (e.g. Master of Psychology (Clinical)) with one further year of supervised practice.

Course learning outcomes

In the context of a JCU graduate, on successful completion of the Bachelor of Psychological Science, graduates will be able to demonstrate a broad and coherent body of knowledge with depth in:

  • The major theoretical perspectives, concepts, and philosophical and historical developments in the core areas of psychology

  • The methods and ethics of scientific investigation as applied to psychology

  • The ethics of professional, evidence based practice and interventions.

Graduates of the Bachelor of Psychological Science will be able to:

  • Review, critique, and synthesise the research literature in the core areas of psychology

  • Exercise critical thinking and judgement in the design and conduct of scientific investigations to solve psychological questions with intellectual independence

  • Communicate a clear, coherent, and independent exposition of knowledge and ideas through well-developed written and spoken English language skills

  • Use information technologies and appropriate techniques to analyse, interpret, and report research findings and data and generate solutions to problems in psychology

  • Adapt and apply research skills and their psychological understanding, including knowledge of cultural diversity, to investigate human and animal behaviour in diverse contexts

  • Interact with others in an ethical and professional manner in research and/or professional practice

  • Demonstrate responsibility and accountability in planning, problem solving, decision making, collaboration and ongoing professional learning in research and/or professional practice.

The Bachelor of Psychological Science is a 72 credit point accredited course which will replace the current 96 credit point Bachelor of Psychology to comply with APAC requirements. The Bachelor of Psychological Science is identical to the first 72 credit points of the previous Bachelor of Psychology. A 24 credit point end-on Honours program will be offered to students who achieve Distinction GPA; and a 24 credit point Graduate Diploma of Psychology will be offered to students who achieve a Credit GPA.

Registration with CPE is currently being sought for the Bachelor of Psychological Science for 2015.

Eligibility

Students may apply for advanced standing for previous tertiary study in accordance with the Advanced Standing and Articulation policy and associated procedures.

Advanced standing will be granted only for studies completed in the 10 years prior to the commencement of this course.

Expiry

Advanced standing gained for any subject shall be cancelled 17 years after the date of the examination upon which the advanced standing is based if, by then, the candidate has not completed this course.

Application for entry to the Honours program is by approval of the College Dean.

Completion of the Bachelor of Psychological Science; and

Achievement of a minimum grade point average of 5.0 (i.e. credit average) across PY2103, PY2107, and a minimum grade point average of 6.0 (i.e. distinction average) across 15 credit points of level 3 PY subjects, including PY3101 in the Bachelor of Psychological Science.
