Hepatitis B immunisation:

Students must provide evidence of being immune to hepatitis B within the first teaching period of their studies. A blood-borne viral disease may result in a student’s inability to obtain a placement in a Queensland Health facility and consequently may result in their inability to complete the requirements of the course as accredited by the relevant professional accrediting body. If a student has not complied with the above requirement by the last day of the first teaching period of their studies, their enrolment will be terminated immediately.

Suitability to Work with Children Card (blue card):

This course includes prescribed professional or clinical placements that may involve contact with children under 18 years of age. Students are required to obtain a Suitability to Work with Children Card (which involves a criminal history check undertaken by the Queensland Police) before the start of the first placement. Students must retain a current Suitability to Work with Children Card for the duration of their course, as failure to do so will result in the termination of their admission to the course.

Current Apply First Aid and CPR Certificate:

Students must hold a current First Aid Certificate before undertaking professional or clinical placements. Students are responsible for any costs associated with obtaining this certificate.

Some professional/clinical placement agencies may require that students hold an advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certificate before undertaking a professional or clinical placement. Students are responsible for any costs associated with obtaining this certificate.

Australian Federal Police Check:

This course includes prescribed professional or clinical placements.  Some placement agencies may require students to produce a current Australian Federal Police check. This is in addition to the requirements for a Blue Card. If requested, students must provide written confirmation of clearance to the Clinical Placement Officer prior to commencement of clinical placement.

James Cook University’s Bachelor of Sport and Exercise Science meets the Exercise and Sports Science Australia standards for Exercise Science membership.

On successful completion of the Bachelor of Sport and Exercise Science, graduates will be able to:

• Demonstrate broad and coherent theoretical and technical knowledge and skills, with depth in the underlying principles and concepts, in the disciplines of clinical exercise physiology and sport and exercise science

• Critically review, analyse, synthesise and apply evidence in clinical exercise physiology and sport and exercise science practice, across a range of social, personal, economic and environmental contexts

• Assess health status and formulate, implement and critically evaluate sustainable management plans to promote and optimise the health and welfare of apparently healthy individuals and/or populations and those who present with acute or chronic health conditions

• Communicate clearly and coherently through well-developed English language and numeracy proficiency, appropriate for graduate entry into the clinical exercise physiology and sport and exercise science workforces

• Demonstrate appropriate professional behaviour, clinical reasoning and sound judgement in problem solving and decision making, in the provision of client-centred practice that is contemporary, evidence based, legal, ethical, safe and culturally sensitive

• Reflect on current skills, knowledge and attitudes, in order to plan and implement ongoing personal and professional development needs

On successful completion of the Bachelor of Business, JCU graduates will be able to:

Supplementary exam for final subject

A student who has failed the final subject towards the award and who gained 40% or more of the marks for that subject, may be granted a supplementary examination in that subject. However if that subject is required for accreditation, then the criteria specified by that accreditation will apply.

Advanced standing gained for any subject shall be cancelled 18 years after the date of the examination upon which the advanced standing is based if, by then, the student has not completed this course.

Exit with lesser award

Withdrawal from the joint degree and transfer to a Bachelor of Sport and Exercise Science or Bachelor of Business shall be approved without loss of advanced standing for any student having completed at least level 1 studies towards the joint degree.

Students must satisfy the School requirements relating to the standard of academic achievement necessary to proceed to the honours degree.
