7 things you need to know about studying Education

Choosing teaching means choosing a future where you can make a real difference to the next generation. If you are ready to explore education, here are the essentials to help you get started.

1. You can start your degree with more financial support than you realise

If cost is on your mind, you are not alone. Most domestic Education students take advantage of a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP). This Australian Government study assist subsidy lowers your tuition by covering part of the cost. You only pay the student-contribution amount, and do not need to repay the CSP portion, as it is not a loan.

You may also be eligible for a Higher Education Loan Program (HELP) loan to defer payments. This takes the pressure off immediate costs and helps you manage your budget while you study.

Additionally, eligible Education students can also earn while they learn. You can receive pay while completing your placements within schools or learning centres through the Commonwealth Prac Payment (CCP). This financial support allows you to focus on your learning and skill development.

For further clarity around costs, you can find more information here or speak with our Future Students team on 1800 246 446 or email enquiries@jcu.edu.au

5. Meaningful work with clear pathways to leadership

Teaching and school leadership are careers where many people find real purpose and satisfaction. Often teachers cite the impact they have on students, the progress they see in the classroom, and being a part of the schooling community as key benefits of their role. Those who move into leadership roles often appreciate being able to support other staff and strengthen the whole learning environment.

If you enjoy helping people grow, teaching gives you many chances to see that progress firsthand. As you gain experience, you can move into leadership roles that expand your influence. It is a career with lasting purpose and steady rewards.

6. A career with regular breaks built into the year

One of the benefits of teaching is the holiday structure. In Australia, teachers receive around 12 weeks of school holidays each year. This gives you set periods throughout the year to pause, recharge or spend time on what matters to you. Many people find this balance to be one of the profession’s strengths.

7. Five decades of insight into regional and remote education

JCU has spent more than 50 years investing in and developing regional and remote education, helping shape how teachers are supported and prepared to educate each generation.

At JCU, you will learn teaching methods and skills for different communities, and why strong school connections matter. You’ll gain the confidence to step into roles across Queensland, no matter where you decide to start your career.
